How to create adgroup with automated targeting in display campaigns?

I set the specific userlist criterion in another adgroup through AdgroupCriterionService API. Now I want to create a adgroup with automated targeting setting(as shown in image above) in display campaign through AdgroupService and AdgroupCriterionService API , but I didn't figure out how to do this. It seems like it won't be set by default if I do nothing in this adgroup.

Thank you for reaching out. If you're using a Smart Display Campaign, you can use the ExplorerAutoOptimizerSetting and set the optIn to true. Please let me know if this is not what you're referring to.

Can I create automated targeting ad group under a display campaign, not under a display smart campaign?

When the automated targeting ad group created manually under a display campaign（not a  display smart campaign, the AdvertisingChannelSubType is none when retrieving through API）, we  can also create other ad groups with specific userlist criterion under the same campaign. 

But when I create automated targeting ad group under a display smart campaign through API, I cannot create other ad groups with userlist criterion. And comparing with the automated targeting ad group created manually in Google Adwords UI, there're some differences.

So my questions are when using API:

Can I create automated targeting ad group under a display campaign with setting ExplorerAutoOptimizerSetting.optin to true, not under a display smart campaign?

If not, can I create none-automated targeting ad group under s display smart campaign?

Hi,

Unfortunately, that setting can only be used for smart display campaigns so you will not be able to use it for a regular display campaign. To create a non-automated ad group in a smart display campaign, just set that setting to false instead.

But the automated targeting ad group created manually in UI is not under a smart display campaign, I retrieve this campaign's settings though API, and campaign's advertising channel subtype is none. That's very confused.
