I got this error message when importing click conversions to Google Ads API:

ERROR: The click associated with the identifier or iOS URL parameter does not exist in the system. This can occur if the identifier or iOS URL parameter are collected for non Google Ads clicks (e.g. dart search)., at conversions[0].gclid

The click ID (gclid) is:

EAIaIQobChMIxZPQob6S9gIVVTytBh3H9QdMEAAYBCAAEgLoqfD_BwE

Which I noticed, is different from the standard ones, that start with the letter "C".

Where does this click ID come from and how can we handle this error?

Hello Hustle,

Thanks for reaching out to the Google Ads API forum team. Can you please confirm if you are using the GoogleAds API v10?
If you are already on v10 and still having issues, kindly share the complete request and response logs with request ID and request header generated on your end, so our team can better check the root cause of the error?

Please send the requested details via the Reply privately to the author option. If this option is not available, you may send the details directly to us googleadsapi-support@google.com alias instead.

Yes, using V10.

I am having issues just with some click IDs. The majority of them are getting processed correctly.

So the implementation is good, it's just that some clicks don't get processed correctly.

What does "dart search" stand for?

Hi Hustle,

Thank you for the replies. I'm also a member of Google Ads API team and allow me to provide support here.

With regard to your concern, it appears that the GCLID generated outside the Google Network is not accepted by the conversion upload. This is the reason why the error occurred. With this, I would suggest reaching out to the Product team to confirm this behavior. I routed you because they know the product level functionalities of conversion. If they can confirm that this is not possible, then this is not also available in the Google Ads API as it is only mimicking the functionalities and behavior of the UI. Also you can raise the question about the GCLID format and how it is being generated because this is done by UI.

Why a click could be generated outside the "Google Network"? I am disabling Search & Display Network from my Campaigns.

Hi Alex,

By default, new ad campaigns are set up to show ads across the entire network to give your ads the most visibility. If clicks are generated outside the "Google Network" despite disabling Search & Display Network from your Campaigns, you may reach out to the Product team via this link, for further assistance as they might check the checkbox settings under "Search Network," at the time of clicks occured.

If I launch a campaign WITHOUT those checkboxes marked, then I don't understand why traffic is coming from Search & Display Network (outside of Google Network), that have invalid click ID values.

The Product team has not changed anything under my campaign settings.

Hi Alex,

Thank you for the reply.

I would also suggest to reach out to the product team via this link as they are more equipped to explain the behavior of the ads and clarify why your ads showed in the dart search that led to this issue. As much as we want to provide support here, our product knowledge is limited only, specifically to the behavior when the said checkboxes are marked/unmarked, and so we wouldn't be able to provide the information that your are looking for.

Hi there,

The support is not really helpful. You are telling me to contact the Product Team. This is the reply by the product team:

Unfortunately, since this is an API issue, we're not able to help out with that. API issues are out of scope for the Google Ads customer support.

You are passing the buck among yourselves and no one is taking responsibility for the incident.

Can someone please help me?

Hi Alex,

I understand the inconvenience you are encountering due to this issue.

Firstly, for the GCLID that you provided, could you confirm where you initially acquired this? I asked because, if this GCLID is indeed associated to your Google Ads account, then performing a click_view report request should confirm this and you can refer to the values returned by the click_view.gclid field.

In addition, you may note that our API team does not have visibility as to other possible platforms a GCLID could be generated from. If there are external sources, then this is already outside of our API team's scope.

For this reason, our team has recommended that you reach out to the Google Ads Product support team, so that you may be able to inquire from their team regarding the origin of the said GCLID, and if they can look it up as a valid one that can be uploaded into your account. You may note as well that if you inquire regarding the specific API error, instead of the validity/origin of the GCLID itself, the support team may direct you back to our channel.

That being said, in the API's perspective, we recommend first that you perform the request using the click_view report. If no results are returned in your queries, then you may reach out once more to the Product team to confirm the source or origin of the said GCLID. I hope this helps.

They told me the following from the Google Ads Product support team:

Unfortunately, we're not able to check the origin.
Have a nice rest of the day!

So they are not able to check the origin of the GCLID provided.

Is there a way to check the origin of the GCLID (ourselves), without the need to interact with the API? Meaning, via the User Dashboard.

Hi Alex,

Our product expertise is limited to AdWords API/Google Ads API, and concerns on checking via the user Dashboard is out of scope for our team. However, you may also try to reach out to the Google Ads Community Forum as they might help to answer your question regarding checking GCID origin via User Dashboard.

Let us know if you have questions related to our API, and we will assist you better.

Hi, I've the same error on v11 in many cases.

One case:
According to other URL parameters this gclid belongs to Google Ads:
utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=18412061406&utm_term=&utm_content=628323498875&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI9Oa5ocHu-gIV5kMdCR2HXAHvEAEYASAAEgLvoPD_BwE
We use tracking template:
utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign={campaignid}&utm_term={keyword}&utm_content={creative}

So campaign id is 18412061406, but upload return an error:
"The click associated with the identifier or iOS URL parameter does not exist in the system. This can occur if the identifier or iOS URL parameter are collected for non Google Ads clicks (for example, Search Ads 360)."

In click_view report I don't see this gclid, also there is not impressions and clicks for this campaign in target date (23 Oct 2022).
Campaign is enabled,  but scheduled only on working days.

Could you clarify cases when we get such error?
Do we need to filter data before upload by click_view report?

Hi Igor,

Thank you for your response.

You may note that our API support team unfortunately does not have visibility regarding the generation of the said GCLIDs. That said, I would recommend that you clarify within your team which tag setup was implemented on your end, so you can also ensure which platform the click IDs are coming from.

As for your other questions :

Could you clarify cases when we get such error?

The error suggests that the click could be from an external source. Click IDs or GCLIDs that are associated to your account should be available via the click_view report, and you should be able to use those in your conversion uploads.

Do we need to filter data before upload by click_view report?

We recommend that you perform this additional step to ensure that you are indeed uploading clicks that are associated to your account and is recognized by Google Ads in the backend.
