selector vs. serviceSelector

Why do some services look for an XML element `selector` (for example BudgetService) while others look for an XML element `serviceSelector` (for example AccountLabelService)? How can I determine which one is required other than by trial and error?

I see now that this is in the WSDL document, and that the AccountLabelService uses selector.
