Hi,

I'd like to ask, if the default text is required when using the if function. If we do not use the default text, is it necessary to use the static ad within the ad group?

Hi Monika,

As per documentation, default text is optional when adding IF functions. The adding of IF functions is primarily for the purpose of inserting a text in your ad when a condition is met. If the IF condition was not met and there is no default value, then no text will appear in the place where you inserted the IF function. Having said that and in relation to your last question, it's not really necessary and will primarily depend on your design decision whether you want to have a static ad along with ads that have IF functions.

Hi Ivan,

Perfect, thank you for your answer. The reason why I asked is that we would like to show custom ad texts for some specific audiences within the ad group, but do not show the ad at all if the condition is not met. We'd like to have separate campaign for people who are not included in any audience. Maybe it would be also good for measuring the performance of the ad, as it is not possible segment if the custom text or default text was displayed (for audiences).

Hi Monika,

If default text is not specified in an IF condition in an Ad, then a static Ad is required in the AdGroup. If you would like to restrict the Ads in an AdGroup/Campaign to a particular audience, you need to setup appropriate targeting and exclusion settings for this AdGroup/Campaign.
