Gmail Ad details - Headline and Description

Hello Google Ads API Team, 

We are in need of retrieving the Ad headline and description and we noticed they are returned null when using the Ad Performance Report; the fields we are trying with are: "gmailAdHeadline" and "gmailAdDescription".

Please advise how we can retrieve such Ad details.

I am a colleague of Dannison and let me relay his response.

Could you confirm if you have received Dannison's response in private? If you haven't, my apologies for the inconvenience. Below is the contents of his response:

"Upon checking the gmail ad in the specified campaign, I can see that you did not set any teaser headline and teaser description similar to the screenshot I attached below when I tried to create these on my own test account. This is the reason why they are not returned in your report. This option will only appear if you directly created the Gmail Ad in your ad group. See the second screenshot for this option in the UI."

Thanks for your update. 

No, I didn't receive Dannison's response in private. 

I have been in contact with our client and they stated that they are using: "Upload Gmail Ads" option since it allows for a custom image.  

Does the current version of the API support this option? 

It would be ideal for us to integrate both options in our software.

Hi,

On the AdWords API, these are the available fields for creating Gmail ads and provided in this link the sample SOAP requests for creating the different types of Gmail ads. If your question is related to 'Upload Gmail Ads' option in UI (please see the screenshot below) which has custom HTML feature, then, I am afraid that this is not currently not supported in AdWords API.

Focusing now on the custom image field, could you provide the screenshot of the said field so I can check if this is possible with AdWords API or if it is indeed already supported in the other image fields (ex. headerImage, marketingImage, productImages) of the GmailAd?

Thanks for your reply. 

Let me explain again what is our case and what we are looking to achieve; our integration with Google Ads API are only used for fetching data of our Ads and Campaigns and we are not currently creating the Ad itself using the API, this we are doing using the UI. 

Getting back to our original inquiry we made in this thread: we are not able to fetch the Ad headline and description using the "gmailAdHeadline" and "gmailAdDescription" fields in the "Ad Performance Report" as always the response is null for these fields. Following Dannison' response he mentioned that it should work when we create our Ads using the "Gmail Ad Option". My question now; as we are creating our Ads using "Upload Gmail ads" which is Option #2, can we still fetch the Ad headline and description fields somehow?

Hi Alex, it is not possible to retrieve the gmailAdHeadline or gmailAdDescription in the Ad Performance Report. I would suggest retrieving those fields with a GET request on the AdService and caching the results so that you can join those fields with the results from the Ad Performance Report as needed.
