Does Google keyword API have limitations?

Can the Keyword API be used to pull traffic from a large volume of keywords (100k+ keywords)? I've been using Google's Keyword Planner but it's very limited and time consuming. I've heard that with the api you can process a lot more keywords but there are others who say your limited to 800 at a time.
