I am seeing conflicting things and I'm really not sure what the limit is and why.

I see 35/38 here (https://developers.google.com/adwords/api/docs/appendix/limits) for the API and 80 for description1 and 80 for description2 here https://support.google.com/adwords/answer/6341403?hl=en

Why is the API limited to 35 and is there any way around this for call only ads?

Hi Steve,

Upon investigation, the AdWords API only limits up to 35 characters of input for the descriptions of call-only ads and returns an error if exceeded. However, upon checking AdWords UI, AdWords UI is implemented with an 80 character limit for descriptions.

Unfortunately, we could not answer as why it is only limited to 35 characters and if you think your description will exceed to over 35 characters, you can do it in AdWords UI for the mean time.  Let me know if you have any more concerns.

You can follow our blog for any future updates on this.

ok...that's definitely disappointing. Hopefully, this can be solved in the next release.  It's a big problem for us as we're managing a lot of call only campaigns at scale and trying to adjust a ton of ads manually will present a huge challenge for a mistaken text limit. I guess I have no choice but to keep an eye out, but I hope you can bring this to the teams' attention and it would be a rather trivial fix.

Thank you for the investigation and response. I appreciate it.
