@Cynical:."...As an aside, your posts almost always add value to the topic under discussion....".When Archimedes ran out of his bath tub, he did not go to see a patent attorney. I too, believe that information should be free.
@Sahara:"Latin has k, dear author, its just that they spell it as qu.".Curious contest of qualitative quotes become quantum.A house in Italian is written as Casa and pronounced "Kaazah", where Capricious Capricians in their Capris consuming cappuccinos..
This remains and shall remain a debate for times to come. Just simple not researched reasoning by way of Judaism leads me to beleive the Zulqarnain referred to in the Quran is Cyrus the great and not Alexander. Prophet Muhammad consulted a great deal with Jews as illustrated in the Quran itself. Thank you for acknowledging that Alexander was a non-Muslim just as Abraham was a non Muslim. Islam back then was not even a pipe dream. Save the etymology, Please!
@sabi:Salman Rashid mentions in his article that the kingdom of Cyrus lasted 200 years until "Alexander unravelled it and became master of it". That would tie in with "two centuries" - Cyrus, the king whose kingdom lasted two centuries. Regards.

If we can distinguish Gog and Magog equation would be simple. I believe ("I believe") its the Chinese race living near the mongol border, if that is the case I am sure Zulqarnain is Alexander. It can someone other then these two as well.. :)
@john harman:"Does it mean that the East and the West need to settle their differences and protect themselves from the north, meaning probably Russia?".Brilliant. Who could have thunk of that? Got more gems like that? Please do share with us.

Most interesting - but a belabored and contrived connection to scripture nevertheless. Alexander was his birth name and not something that he was bestowed after saving or separating men from harm, although the name does indeed mean protector of men; remember that he was Alexander the third, preceded by two other Macedonian kings with the same name. Once you remove the etymological connection, all that remains is myth. The fact is that the myth of Alexander, including his divinity continued well beyond his death, and was utilized by the Ptolemaic dynasty to legitimize their satrapy and eventual rule until the Roman conquest in 30 BC. Given the proximity of Egypt to Arabia, it is highly likely that the halo of Alexander spread to these lands as well.
