Action Needed: Senate to Vote on Unprecedented Lay Midwifery Bill

Take Action!

This week in the Senate Judiciary I Committee, SB 107 - Decriminialize Direct-Entry Midwifery was passed with a voice vote and no opportunity for the public to be heard.

The title of the bill is misleading. This is no longer a decriminalization bill. This is the authority to practice medicine without limitation and without oversight or fear of disciplinary action.

What SB 107 now does:

  • Beginning on July 1, 2014, authorizes Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) to provide medical services - only without a board, licensure or physician oversight.
  • CPMS will be permitted to administer/prescribe controlled substances and other drugs, perform some surgical procedures, screen for cancer, and serve as primary care providers to women and pediatricians to children.
  • A patient will have no recourse to a state licensure board or the district attorney for harm that may be caused by a CPM practicing medicine. Physicians and hospitals will have no legal protection from accepting emergency transfers.

Please contact your Senator today and ask them to vote NO on SB 107.
