So, I took a bit of time yesterday to start to answer the question "where is the brightest piece of Puppis A"? I'm still working on it, but I recall reading somewhere that Dave Tosteson once saw it...presumably from the southern United States and with his 32-inch? I can't find an article by him in the index for Sky & Telescope, Deep-Sky Observer, Amateur Astronomy, nor Deep Sky Magazine.

I'm dreaming of seeing it someday from the United States. But even from Jimi Lowrey's observatory, it only rises 16.5* up...which is probably below where he takes his telescope. Maybe it would be visible from the Florida Keys or Hawai'i with a 16-inch or less?

I don’t recall Tosteson writing about Puppis A in Sky & Tel anyways, but he did write an article on another extremely tough object — Tycho’s SNR 1572 — in the June 2016 issue. Perhaps that’s what you’re recalling, Scott?

Thanks, Steve, but I know it wasn't that. It was something that Dave only mentioned in passing or was mentioned about him. I think it must have been in an Amateur Astronomy issue that my index doesn't cover. So, I'll reach out to Charlie Warren and see if he knows. I'm trying to figure out if Stromlo 13 (Gum 13) is part of it since it may be the brightest little piece, oddly enough.

I hope to attend next year's Winter Star Party on our FL trip and can find out more.

Take me with you, Ted! ;)

What size telescope do you plan to bring?

Thank you Scott,
