I get the following error when trying to connect minecraft to local host.

/127.0.0.1:55629 lost connection: internal exception: io.netty.handler.codec.DecoderException: The received string length is longer than maximum allowed (23>16)

I have followed all the instructions in the first part of the book and can't get beyond entering the "localhost" in the join server.

Help please this a Christmas gift for my grandson and so far all I am is frustrated can't believe he will do any better.

Per book I am using Minecraft 1.12, the most recent version of Java is installed (checked that today 12/22) and Adventures in Microsoft version appears to be have been created June 14, 2017.  I am using a PC running Windows 10.

Hi Teresa,

Sorry you have experienced some problems. We dont see many issues, but if we do, it tends to be right at the start.

We should try the simple things to start:
  1. rebooting your PC and trying again - I know its a cliche but turning it off and on again can work!
  2. could you delete the "adventures-in-minecraft-pc" folder from your desktop and re-download it from https://adventuresinminecraft.github.io/, to make sure nothing is corrupt
  3. if you are still having problems, could you take a screenshot of your PC with the error on, it would be useful to see the Minecraft and "command" window where the Minecraft server is running - you can use the Snipping app (Start > Windows Accessories > Snipping Tool)

Martin,

I think this is what you wanted.  I have restarted the PC and reloaded the folders from the web site and I am still getting the same error.

Hi Teresa,

This isn't an error I have seen before and I havent been able to recreate the error either.

I have been doing some 'googling', by any chance is your Minecraft username longer than 16 characters?  There seems to be an issue with players whose usernames are longer than 16 characters being able to join servers.

When you try and connect in Minecraft does the game give you an error? If so could you screenshot that as well.

If your profile name is longer than 16 charactors (perhaps its your email address?) - google tells me you can change it by:

To change your Minecraft username:
  1. Visit account.mojang.com, and log in with your Mojang account email address and password.
  2. Next to your Minecraft profile name, click the link that says "Change".
  3. Enter a new name, and confirm the new name by entering your password again.
  4. Click the "Change name" button.
