Hi,

I'm struggling with the Minecraft launcher on Windows 10 as I don't seem to have it. The minecraft version is from the Microsoft store not the Java edition. Could that be the issue?

Is there a way of changing versions or do I need to purchase the Java version?

Yes, you will need the Java version. The bedrock version in Windows 10 doesnt support the mods you will need.
