At the outset, please note that this trek is not being organized by
AdVentura, but by Himalya Trekker and this posting is FYI for
AdVentura members who might be interested in trekking this route.

Having said that, I can vouch for the person who is organizing the
trek, Saptarshi Roy, who was an IT Professional and quit his job to
pursue his passion for romancing the mountains full time. I was part
of a trek organized by him to Roopkund and it was very well done.

I can also vouch for this trek. I have been on this twice and it is a
beautiful trek and if the weather gods favor you, you will get nice
views of Kanchenjunga,Lhotse, and Mt.Everest. The trek grading would
be Easy-Moderate.

So, without further ado, here go the trip details.

About Sandakphu Phalut Trek:

Sandakphu is the highest point of West Bengal at 3636m in
the district of Darjeeling. This trek follows the famous Singalila
Ridge, a prominent spur of high ground that lies at the southern end
of a long crest, which runs down from the Kanchenjungha massif and
forms the border between Sikkim & Nepal. One of the unavoidable
necessities of trekking in Himalaya is that the best views are had
from high up but the trek along this ridge, passing through small
settlements, is perhaps the on of the most scenically rewarding in the
Himalaya. There are spectacular panoramic views of Kanchenjunga,
Makalu, Everest, Lhotse, Janu and a host of other peaks all seen in
one stretch.

Day 1: Pick up from NJP railway station/Bagdogra airport in the
morning by 10 am and drive to Maneybhanjang (~ 1980m, 6500ft).

beside the lodge.

ft, 1.5 km) to see the sunrise. One a clear dawn one can see the
mesmerising view of the Himalaya. After returning to Tumling we will
have the breakfast and the trek for the day starts. We reach
Kalipokhri (3100m, 10170ft) via Joubari & Gairibas. Distance is 12 km.
Through the route one can see several Nepalese villages scattered on
different ridges. Night stay in tourist rest house.

Day 4: Today a steep & steady climb to Sandakphu (~3636m, 12000ft) m
via Bhikeybhanjang. The reward is remarkable breathtaking panoramic
view of the snowy ranges of Nepal, Sikkim & Bhutan. The prominent
peaks are Kanchenjunga range, Kabru range, Kumbhakarna (Janu), Pandim,
Everest, Lhotse & Makalu.

Day 7: We trek to Srikhola (~ 2000 m, 6600 ft)and stay in the lodge
beside the beautiful river called Sri Khola ( khola means river in
Nepali). Distance is around 14 km.

may be interested.

Cheers
Sapta

Couldn't resist the temptation to put down some notes about this trek...this was my first trek ever way back in 1994 :-)

The trek is (or rather was) one of the most scenic in the North East Himalaya. The unique feature of this trek is that you get to see 3 of the 8000M+ peaks of the world... Kanch, Everest and a glimpse of Lhotse. The fantastic east ridge of Kanchendzonga seems to be a stone throw distance from the Sandakphu top. The trek provides ample opportunity to enjoy natural beauty to it's fullest.

However, like many other routes in Himalaya, this route has steadily declined to it's beauty and tranquility due to inevitable progress of civilization. Now that there is a paved road to Sandakphu top, vehicles can go to the top without much problem carrying volumes of people with them. The place now suffers from overcrowding, deforestation, loudness and filth. Demand of a quick view of Everest is growing which is supported by jeep safari which can carry people from Siliguri to Sandakphu top within a day and back to the next day. Needless to say, due to quick ascent and fitness issues, sick people are now common on the route and deaths has also occurred. The route has become a tourist attraction.

Still is remains a great trek for the beginners due to the variety in the gradient and the vista, hence recommended but with a cautionary note.

Ujjal

True, though the trekking path does skirt around the jeep path
partially. However, the trek from Sandakphu onwards towards Phalut and
ending in Srikhola is very picturesque and is safe from the blessings
(!) of civilization.

For those who do decide to go on the trek, a word of caution, do stay
away from the outdated jeeps that go up to Sandakphu. They are just
disasters waiting to happen. Even if you are drop dead tired, you are
better off hiking than sitting in one of those jeeps.....as the saying
goes 'better late than never' !
