Greetings Scouts,

This Monday is the last scout meeting of the year. Please come see me to pick up the workbook for Citizenship in the Nation or print your own copy.

I have created the following Doodle Poll to indicate which evenings are available for me in the next couple of weeks. We will utilize the process of elimination to find a mutual time that works for everyone as you are wrapping up school, starting  camps and summer jobs. Please indicate which dates you are available. If none of these options work, please let me know.

Here is your first easy homework.
Requirement #5: Watch the national evening news for five days in a row or read the main stories in a national media organization (e.g., a newspaper or news website) for five days in a row. Discuss the national issues that you learned about with your counselor. Choose one of the issue and explain how it affects you, your family, and community.

My personal favorite option to catch up on news is to watch a 20 min youtube recap from last evenings NBC broadcast on Youtube. It is a nice mix of breadth and depth. Nightly News - Youtube - Lester Holt I sometime go with the audio only version "Hey Siri Play NBC Nightly News with Leister Holt Podcast". If you prefer reading options, here are several major newspapers that have National converage:

The 2nd homework is for you to begin working on requirement 8 is to identify a National Issue for you to write a letter to congress. I would like to hear your thoughts about which topics the scouts are thinking about. I will give some pointers on how to write such a letter in the next meeting.

Requirement #8: Name your representatives in the United States Congress. Write a letter to your representative in Congress explaining your view on a national issue. Show your letter, along with any response you might receive, to your counselor.

Best regards,
Jeremy Disch

Hi Max,
I realize you are not available at the Thursday time block. I can cover anything with you separately on Monday to keep you in the loop.

Greetings Scouts.

It appears that the best time to meet initially would be tomorrow to kick off Citizenship in the Nation. Please reply to me that you intend to attend.

Please print out a copy of the workbook and have it available during our merit badge class, as we will be using it to show your work progress.

Homework: Please choose a speech of national Historical importance: (some examples listed below). You can begin by filling out the sections of the workbook to answer requirement #6 questions (at least start by tomorrow by choosing a speech).  At the beginning of each meeting, I will have an opportunity for scouts to share with the group what you learned for individual work (Speech, News, Congressional letter, etc.)

Greetings scouts,

I see that I am having a little difficulty finding a mutual time for everyone during a 7-8 timeframe. Therefore I am adding in some additional time blocks to consider next week for tuesday and wednesday @5 or @6. Millie and Colin, could you take a look again to see if either of these may work for you?
