Hi all,

Maryanne Rhett, "The Mask or the Veil: Unraveling the Cultural Discourse in France and

Popular Culture," Middle Ground Journal, 2013. Dr. Rhett's article explains how the legacy of

French cultural mores, colonialism, and Orientalism have shaped and reshaped popular culture

like comic books and film which has impacted French public perception of the Islamic populatin

in early 21st century France. Mask (as in Batman)= superhero, Veil (Muslim women)=The Other.
