Nowadays most people use market mechanism to explain everything, and
it seems to work quite well in most occasions. However, financial
crisis we are facing today has effectively proved that market
mechansim indeed has its pitfalls. Professor Michael Sandel form
Harvard University argues that market has already expanded into areas
that it is not supposed to have any influence. Moreover, he suggests
that we should set a limit for market, valuing the moral value that
market mechanism tend to neglect.
Do you agree with Professor Michael Sandel?
In his Lecture "Market and Morals", he provides several examples to
support his argument. Next week we will delve into these examples to
see if marke nechanism has indeed done a terrible job and worsen the
situation, just as what Mr.Sandel says. In this process, I hope that
we would develope our own point of view in this regard.
Issues:
1. Do you agree with Mr.Sandel on his conclusion regarding refugee
quota, blood donation and grenhouse gas trading? Or other example he
provides? Please share your view with all group members whether you
agree or not :)
2. Which social areas do you think that market should have absolute no
say whatsoever?
3. In which occasion do you think that market can create most benefit
for all parties involved without damaging moral value?
As host of next week, I have marked vocabularies and underlined key
sentence in the attached article. I hope that would increase your
reading efficiency in terms of your comprehension of this speech.
In the attached file, you can skip the chatting part in the begging
and Q&A part in the end, focusing on the main content of Mr. Sandel's
speech which starts from p.5 to p.16.
