Shiva is not a son to anyone - Varaha Purana

A rare Hari-Hara Abheda story

In this chapter of the Varaha Purana Shiva himself said to the River Reva:

वराहपुराणम्/अध्यायः १४४

रेवया च कृतं पूर्वं तपः शिवसुतुष्टिदम् ।।३३ ।।

मम त्वत्सदृशः पुत्रो भूयादिति मनीषया।।

अहं कस्यापि न सुतः किं करोमीति चिन्तयन् ।।३४।।

रेवायास्तु वरो देयस्त्ववश्यं मृगलाञ्छन ।।

निश्चित्यैवं तदा प्रोक्तः प्रसन्नेनान्तरात्मना ।। ३५ ।।

लिंगरूपेण ते देवि गजाननपुरस्कृतः ।।

गर्भे तव वसिष्यामि पुत्रो भूत्वा शिवप्रिये।।३६।।

River Reva did penance on Lord Shiva and begged for a son similar to Lord Shiva. Shiva then thought 'I am no one's son; what to do now?' He gave her the boon of being born as a son.

From this we know that 'Shiva is son of Brahma' and 'He is Vishnu's son' etc. told in the Mahabharata in other Puranas are not any real position of son. Shiva had become a son for different reasons, not in reality.

In the same chapter there is also a story that when the river Gandaki did penance on Vishnu and asked for a son like Vishnu, the Lord acceded and fulfilled her wish in the form of Saligrama in that Gandaki river:

ततो हिमांशो सा देवी गण्डकी लोकतारिणी ।। ५७ ।।

प्रांजलिः प्रणता भूत्वा मधुरं वाक्यमब्रवीत् ।।

यदि देव प्रसन्नोऽसि देयो मे वाञ्छितो वरः ।। ५८ ।।

मम गर्भगतो भूत्वा विष्णो मत्पुत्रतां व्रज ।।

ततः प्रसन्नो भगवांश्चिन्तयामास गोपते ।। ५९।।

किं याचितं निम्नगया नित्यं मत्सङ्गलुब्धया ।।

दास्यामि याचितं येन लोकानां भवमोक्षणम् ।। १४४.६०।।

इत्येवं कृपया देवो निश्चित्य मनसा स्वयम्।।

गण्डकीमवदत्प्रीतः शृणु देवि वचो मम ।।६१ ।।

शालग्रामशिलारूपी तव गर्भगतः सदा ।।

स्थास्यामि तव पुत्रत्वे भक्तानुग्रहकारणात।।।६२।।

मत्सान्निध्यान्नदीनां त्वमतिश्रेष्ठा भविष्यसि ।।

दर्शनात्स्पर्शनात्स्नानात्पानाच्चैवावगाहनात् ।।६३।।
