The last part has not been reviewed which refers to exceptions. These portions also require to be studied before we finalize our  understanding completely, is my humble submission.

Further it would be good to recognize  'Shudra' may be referring to "characteristic of the Mind based on its texture and the activities one engages oneself with" rather than the caste one is born into.  Vidura and a few others are classic exceptions.

In the context of Atma Vidya, all such injunctions are to avoid the mistakes like Virochana committed while interpreting SELF, when he was bestowed with Brahma Vidya when he was not prepared- in Chandogya Upanishad.

  • Though we can agree and argue that varNa ( or caste in lose terms) is based on guNa-karma, it is quite evident in our smruti and mythological texts  insist more on birth based caste.  karNa (daasi putra), vAlmeeki (hunter), vyAsa (fisherman), shambuka & guha in rAmAyaNa though they were spiritually evolved souls we do recognize them based on their birth not by guNa nor by karma.
