Namaskars,
Would Shankaracharya approve of his deification and approve of his puja? I doubt it. We may be doing a disservice to him because some lazy persons would be content to do puja and leave it at that, without actually reading and critically understanding what he wrote. Some people are doing the same for Ramakrishna and Vivekananda.
I have all regard for Shankaracharya, and I have been teaching his bhashyams.
Regards,
Aravinda Rao

In case of Sr Ramakrishna, he was done puja while he was sa-sharira infront of him.

Ramchandra dutta,Girish chandra Ghosh, and then the 12 disciples, all of them did do that.

My 2 cents on this.

Yours sincerely
Saptarshi

Hare Krishna

Would Shankaracharya approve of his deification and approve of his puja? I doubt it.

  • Why doubt??  You mean to say vedAnta jignAsa and pooja to his own guru / Acharya cannot go hand in hand 😊 Of course it is traditionally believed that bhAshyakAra who said Ishwara ( saguNa sOpAdhika brahma) is kevala avidyAkruta and kevala vyAvahArika satya, advocated paNchAyatana pooja.  And written lot of stOtra-s and talked about archana/dhyAna/ upAsana of one’s own ishta devata in his bhAshya-s.

We may be doing a disservice to him because some lazy persons would be content to do puja and leave it at that, without actually reading and critically understanding what he wrote.

  • I am not able to understand this link between doing the guruvandana/ guru pooja and laziness.  For that matter if the guru pooja / guru Vandana done with utmost bhakti, shraddha with ekagrata, guru himself would guide that pupil in the wright mArga even if the later does not have any exposure to his guru’s works, is it not??

Some people are doing the same for Ramakrishna and Vivekananda.

Ø     Perhaps with the same intentions as I said above.

I have all regard for Shankaracharya, and I have been teaching his bhashyams.

Ø    Doing the guru pooja is one of the ways of showing our esteemed adoration and respect to our guru.  IMO.

Hari Hari Hari Bol!!!

Shankara, in his prasthanatraya bhashyas, has explicitly advocated the physical puja of the Guru:

We find the following three verses at the beginning of the Taittiriya Bhashyam, one of which is a direct namaskara to his Purvacharyas who have expounded the Upanishads:

यैरिमे गुरुभिः पूर्वं पदवाक्यप्रमाणतः । व्याख्याताः सर्ववेदान्तास्तान्नित्यं प्रणतोऽस्म्यहम् ॥ २ ॥
At the end of the Mandukya bhashya he composes verses in veneration of his Guru and Paramaguru.
In the Mundaka bhashya explaining the mantra which says: the aspirants for worldly benefits and moksha have to venerate the Brahma Jnani, Shankara says: by prakakshina namaskara, etc.
At the end of the Prashnopanishad bhashya, while the aspirants are paying their respects to their Guru Pippalada for having given them the Brahmavidya, the upanishad says: tam archantaH, Shankara says: by submitting flowers at the feet of the Guru, etc.
So, Shankara is quite open to the Puja of the Acharya.
Interestingly we find similar, almost same, wordings in Shankara's opening and closing verses for the 17th chapter of the Upadeshasahasri.

Namaskars,
No problem. When I referred to laziness I was referring to those who have not read the bhashyas and those who are not interested in the bhashyas. I am not referring to those who actually read and revere. I have seen such people who ostentatiously do puja and are done with that.
