Thought this information about the upcoming test might be useful.
Dear
COABE friends... I wanted to quickly chime in and clarify a few points that may
still be confusing to some about changes to the GED testing program —
specifically about the test on computer. I’ve quickly listed a few items below
that I think may be helpful to most:
- The GED test on computer — now offered in 17 states —
and the new 2014 GED test is indeed NOT online. Whether adults take the test
on computer or on paper, they must take it in person at an official testing
center. We have a public campaign just around this issue, and online fraud,
that has resulted in hundreds of news stories, and a segment on The Today
Show. This is an important issue that I’ve personally been working on for the
4+ years I’ve been with GED Testing Service. We encourage you to help spread
the word. You can direct people to www.GEDtestingservice.com/fraud where they
can find information and report potential
scams/fraud.
- The GED test does not require a live internet
connection at the time of test. This was very important when we considered the
move to computer-based testing, to have solutions to better serve rural
populations and correctional facilities.
- Moving to computer-based testing was not driven by a
GED Testing Service whim. This move is being driven by society and the
workforce. Basic technology is considered a component of basic literacy by
DOE, and is increasingly becoming a necessity in the workplace (from
administrative jobs to stock clerks to health care settings). Adult learners
need to have basic technology skills in order to be successful in jobs. In
fact, jobs with the 10 largest U.S. employers: Walmart, IBM, UPS, McDonald’s,
Target, Kroger, etc. will start with an online job application. And, many
certificate and credentialing programs GED grads will use next for jobs
(Pharmacy Tech, college entrance exams, etc.) will be delivered on computer.
Experts say that in the next 10 years, more new technology will be introduced
into the world that in the last 50 years combined.
- I encourage everyone to get information from the
source, so you can ensure you have the most up-to-date and accurate
information. Anyone can sign up for our quarterly e-newsletter “The Community”
at GEDtestingservice.com, this source also is used to send major updated and
announcements (like when the corrections solutions are soon to be released) or
sign up for the “Assessment Alerts” at www.GEDtestingservice.com/assessment.
The alerts tell you when new or updated information is assed to the site about
the new 2014 GED test (like when the item sampler is released next month, or
when the Assessment Guide for Educators was released this
spring).
