Check out our DC homeowner's manual to help you plan and execute your ADU project. We cover zoning, design, financing, budgets, contracting and property management. We intend this to be the definitive manual to help DC homeowners build their accessory apartment or second dwelling.

(Also found on UPO's website)

We also have youtube recordings from summer discussions on design & cost, zoning, and permitting for ADUs in DC.

On the December 17th online forum, there was some discussion of an upcoming memorandum from DCRA regarding fire sprinklers in attached ADUs.

I wasn't clear what was being discussed.  Is the anticipated memorandum from DCRA about the connection size for the water supply line or is it about whether or not sprinklers will continue to be required in a new basement ADU for example?

I’m checking on a DCRA memo in sprinklers and ceiling height.

Cool, thanks Cheryl.
Items such as fire protection, ceiling clearance and other hyper-particular items depend on EACH project, its existing conditions and the scope of work to be developed.
I highly recommend that, if a homeowner has questions about their project to reach out to DCRA or any of the architects in this forum. We've been exposed (and cried) over building code sections, sub sections and sub sub sections that may apply to your particular situation. Don't think that something "is" or "isn't" based on a rumor or neighboring property. General ideas? Yes, very particular details that affect cost, livability and safety must be looked at carefully.
As I always say... do not panic, let the architect do the panicking for you.
All the best,
ileana
