Dream Team,

At yesterday's meeting, I mentioned a large grant that will be offered in the coming weeks. For those of you who were at the Safari for the Soul Visions and Voices event, you may already know about it. Below is an email from Vice Provost Adam Powell talking about it a little bit. This is a great chance for ADP to keep the momentum going for positive change. Our grant writing committee, headed by Jordan Close, will definitely be working on this.

Have a great week and fight on.

Good evening

For those of you who were not at the Nov. 12 Visions and Voices event, here are highlights of Provost Nkias' announcement of the new USC Africa fund:

USC is launching a new Africa Student Fund, an endowment to support students' travel to Africa for study, research, service-based learning and internships.

The USC Africa Student Fund will be inaugurated with $100,000, which will generate sufficient income to support travel by at least two students each year, and will be the focus of additional fundraising activity by the university.

This builds on the Global Scholars program and is in response to high student interest in Africa, as documented in last year's USC Africa survey and student presentations during the Africa lunch program last December.

The USC Africa Student Fund also a response to a need identified by faculty for funding for student travel, funding which is often not included in grants for research in Africa.

The USC Africa Student Fund  represents an investment in USC students and an investment in Africa: A significant percentage of USC students who travel to Africa, whether for study, research, service-based learning or internships, remain involved in African affairs and return to the continent. Their continuing presence and their partnerships with Africans and African institutions strengthen both the ties between the US and Africa and the ties between USC and Africa.

This is in addition to existing support for USC student international travel, including the SOAR program in the College and similar programs in the Keck School of Medicine and other professional schools.

The Office of the Provost also supports travel by several doctoral students each year to the annual doctoral student conference of the Association of Pacific Rim Universities.

In addition, the Office of the Provost supports the visits to campus by leading figures from other countries, through the Provost Distinguished Visitor Program. Last year, one of the Provost Distinguished Visitors was a leader from Rwanda.

More about the USC Africa Student Fund, including details of the application process and deadlines, will be announced in future weeks.

Thank you for all of your work and interest in USC and Africa. We are moving into the next phase!

Regards
Adam
