Wheninstalling a fresh copy of Windows 10, you typically use a USB flash drive to launch the "Windows Setup" wizard to continue the installation process. However, on a device that has a Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI) instead of the legacy Basic Input/Output System (BIOS), it is crucial to use the correct media for the firmware type to complete the installation successfully.

On Windows 10, you can use at least two tools to create a bootable USB flash drive. You can use the Microsoft Media Creation Tool to download the files onto a removable drive with support for both firmware types (UEFI and legacy BIOS). Or you can use Rufus, a third-party tool that makes it easy to create a flash drive to install Windows with support for UEFI.

Once you complete the steps, the Media Creation Tool will download the files and will create a bootable USB flash drive that you can use to install Windows 10 on computers with support for UEFI and BIOS.

If the Media Creation Tool does not work or you do not want to use it, then you can try Rufus, a popular free third-party tool that allows you to create an installation media with support for UEFI devices. The utility offers two ways to make the installation media, including using an existing ISO file or downloading the image from the Microsoft servers directly from the app.

Once you complete the steps, Rufus will run the automated script to download the Windows 10 ISO file from the Microsoft servers and create a bootable media to install the operating system on a UEFI device without needing the Media Creation Tool.

When you have the USB boot media with support for UEFI systems, you can launch the "Windows Setup" wizard to perform a clean installation of Windows 10 or an in-place upgrade. However, since the "UEFI:NTFS bootloader" does not include a digital signature for secure boot, you must temporarily disable secure boot on the motherboard firmware before you can boot into the setup. Typically, you would do this from within the UEFI, which you can access by hitting one of the function keys (F1, F2, F3, F10, or F12), Esc, or the Delete key, as soon as you start the computer.

The firmware settings are different per manufacturer and even by device model. As a result, check your device manufacturer's support website for more specific instructions. After the installation of Windows 10, you can enable secure boot again.

Rufus is a free and open-source utility that helps format and create bootable USB flash drives, such as USB keys/pendrives, memory sticks, etc. Rufus is useful in a variety of scenarios, such as booting a PC from an ISO image, transferring files from a damaged PC to a new one, or installing an operating system from a bootable USB drive.

An ISO file (or ISO image) is an archive file of an optical disc, comprising all the content on the disc. ISO files are used to burn discs or create bootable USB drives, and can be used to install operating systems such as Windows 10.

A bootable USB drive is a USB drive that has been formatted and has an operating system installed on it. This allows you to use the USB drive to boot up and run a computer, instead of using an optical disc.

You will then be alerted that Rufus has detected that the Ubuntu ISO is an ISOHybrid image. This means the same image file can be used as the source for both a DVD and a USB stick without requiring conversion.

The ISO will now be written to your USB stick, and the progress bar in Rufus will give you some indication of where you are in the process. With a reasonably modern machine, this should take around 10 minutes. Total elapsed time is shown in the lower right corner of the Rufus window.

When Rufus has finished writing the USB device, the Status bar will be filled green and the word READY will appear in the center. Select CLOSE to complete the write process.

To use it you need to insert the stick into your target PC or laptop and reboot the device. It should recognise the installation media automatically during startup but you may need to hold down a specific key (usually F12) to bring up the boot menu and choose to boot from USB.

I am trying to get Windows on external drive with Rufus i went on my external Windows with a flash drive with Windows 10 iso and Windows support. The only drive that showed on Rufus was the flash drive i had another drive Ex fat Guid. I closed Windows and took the drive that i wanted to put Windows on and the USB Flash drive out of the computer.Booted back to Mac then booted back to Windows and it said there was an errer it would not start i have a second drive with Windows on it and said the same thing?

I am using the drives in a CalDigit Thunderbolt3 dock.It seems a bit odd for both the drives to have the same problem.the reason i am trying to get it on an external drive is two problems 1.it says no host Driver for Bluetooth the only thing that is not working as it should is the Trackpad. The main thing is no sound from the internal speakers but it shows the green sound-bar is working in them.I don,t understand why

I have plugged the Windows drive direst into the computer well one of them not the thunderbolt one. iI booted into Windows tried Rufus again and still said there was only the USB Flash drive in the devices all though i see that the drive i want to put Windows is showing on the drives in Windows and the light is showing it is working on CalDigit Thunderbolt3 dock.I see that he mentions in the video that not all drives work for it in Rufus .I am not sure what he means ,does it mean like mine that it does not show as a device in Rufus?Or that he goes through the process and does not work at all?Would it work with a thunderbolt drive?
