I need to recreate an image that contains text, which was originally made using Times
New Roman, PSMT. I do not know what OS they worked on but I use a PC and Photoshop 6.
My version of Times New Roman is Times New Roman PS, which appears rounder than PSMT.
Could you please help me find this font- Times New Roman, PSMT. Thank you very very much!

The PS stands for PostScript and the MT stands for Monotype. While the digital font Times Roman is based on the Linotype version of the 1930s font popularly attributed to Stanley Morison, I believe the fonts called Times New Roman should be based on the Monotype matrices. Adobe sells a version of Times New Roman MT and I'm guessing this is the one you are after. It is also included with Acrobat 5. Which foundry made the TNR that you do have? If it is also Adobe, it should be very close to TNR PSMT. I think the metrics changed from the early 1990s versions, but I don't know that there were noticeable changes to the outlines (certainly nothing that would make the letters look more rounded). Maybe Thomas can enlighten us.

PS. You are comparing printouts aren't you? Not just comparing the fonts on screen?

Dominic-thank you for such a prompt and thoughtful response.

I am not comparing the prints. I am just comparing the fonts on screen; it is all web images, and viewed in IE. (I know this should not be too complicated, i think i should be able to download this particular font from somewhere).
I also think that the issue is that Photoshop 7 for MAC may have different font types than Photoshop 6 for PC.
I am still a bit confused as to how get that font though..
Any further ideas?

~thank you in advance for any help

p.s. Who is Thomas?

Alfiya,

If you are comparing fonts on screen, it would not be accurate unless you are viewing them at high resolution and/or magnification. This has to do with what is technically known as "hinting", i.e. how the fonts' outlines are represented at compromised resolutions and/or magnifications.

Victor Lee.

Victor,

Thank you very much for your comment.

For web purposes, I would say you are not going to notice the difference between TNR PSMT and TNR - there are far more important factors that will influence the final appearance than using the exact same version of the font. As I say, I don't know what the differences between TNR and TNR MT are (apart from the metrics), but they are likely to be very small. As an example, the differences between Times Roman and Times New Roman include such subtle details as an angled serif on the capital S in TR as against a vertical serif in TNR and a serif on the 5 in TR as against no serif in TNR - hardly the sort of stuff you'd notice on screen! And that's between TR and TNR - two versions of TNR will be even less "dramatic".

You are great, and I appreciate your help, thank you.
My last question would be: if I would need to get TNR PSMT – where can I get it from?

Thank you

Alfiya

Fonts.com, from Agfa-Monotype would be a start. Go to: <http://www.fonts.com/findfonts/?sid=5RLKG79209R88G72XQ68L86XJ4X73LT3>

If you check my first post, you will see I did answer this for you. Adobe sells Times New Roman PSMT, so you can download it from the Adobe website. It's also included in Acrobat 5 software, so if you have that you will already have TNR PSMT.
