pdf's stopped working

As of a few days ago my PDF's no longer open in Adobe Reader XI. I can see the AcroRd32.exe in my task manager using up to 24M of memory but the PDF never opens.
I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling reader XI, rebooting, trying to open reader without a file, but nothing changes.
I am running Windows 7 Starter and until a few days ago they worked fine. Any ideas?
