But then, I downloaded and installed the upgrade to Windows Vista Home Premium edition.
Now, Adobe Reader 8 will not open.
Is Adobe aware of this problem, and will there be a fix for it?
Is Adobe aware of this problem, and will there be a fix for it?
We're not aware of any Reader launching issues on Vista. Have you tried a Reader Repair from add/remove programs?
I tried over and over, uninstalling, deleting, downloading, and installing.
Today, I spent three hours on the phone with a Microsoft technician in Bombay, India, and simultaneously, he conferred with someone from Adobe.
They couldn't find a solution, but think Adobe will have a patch available for download by tomorrow.
I finally did figure out a way to make Adobe work.
Once it's downloaded and installed, you must select "launch Adobe Reader" immediately.
Adobe Reader WILL open.
Then, when you're finished with Adobe Reader, you must MINIMIZE it.
Do NOT close Adobe Reader, because once it closes, it will not open again.
The only way to fix the problem is to uninstall Adobe Reader and install it again.
Also, after installing Adobe Reader, you must go to "Manage Add Ons" in the Internet Explorer browser, and select Adobe Reader.
In addition to downloading Adobe Reader, I also downloaded and installed Adobe Customization Wizard 8, although I have no idea what that's supposed to do, or if it had any affect at all.
I have found this very same problem with AOL Instant Messenger and BOINC, which I use for running S.E.T.I. @ Home.
All three programs are fine as long as they are left open and minimized.
But, if any of those programs are closed, or if the computer is rebooted, the programs will not open again, and can only be opened after a new installation.
I couldn't use my printer, either, but by the end of the day, the manufacturer, Hewlett-Packard, had supplied a downloadable patch for the driver to make it compatible with Windows Vista.
So now, my printer works.
I reckon these problems will be fixed, sooner or later.
But it is scary and aggravating.
The installation seems to be never completed, since i try without re-booting the PC to install again, a window tells me the program is trying to already install itself
Are you still trying to install the French language version of Windows Vista?
My computer is a three hundred gigabyte Hewlett-Packard Pavilion m7463w, which came with Windows XP Media Center Edition installed.
I downloaded and installed the Windows Vista Home Premium upgrade directly from the Microsoft web site, and except for software conflicts, such as Adobe Reader, everything seems to be running pretty well.
Even the Adobe Reader conflict has been resolved by removing Adobe Reader 8, and replacing it with Adobe Reader 7.9, and when viewing PDF documents at a web site, using the Mozilla Firefox browser instead of the Internet Explorer 7 browser.
When upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista, the installation appears to be VERY slow, and it does take several hours.
During the initial phase of installation, when it is "Collecting Information", it appears to freeze up.
However, the installation is NOT frozen, but you merely need to wait patiently, and the installation will continue.
Thinking there was something wrong, I aborted my installation a couple of times, each time rebooting and trying once more to install the upgrade, until finally, I took a chance and left the computer alone.
Later on, I could see the installation FINALLY completed "Collecting Information", and then the rest of the installation continued uninterrupted.
Again, upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista takes SEVERAL hours, and in some computers, the installation can take as long as fourteen hours.
So, if you're trying to install the upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista, just reboot, run the install program again, and wait patiently (or impatiently).
Be sure to enter your Windows Vista registration key when asked, and to click "Accept" when asked, otherwise, the installation will fail, AND Microsoft might make you pay AGAIN for the Windows Vista upgrade.
Adobe Reader 8 worked perfectly in Windows XP Media Center Edition, and it worked with Internet Explorer 7.
But, Adobe Reader 8 does not work in Windows Vista, and Adobe Windows 7.9 won't work with Internet Explorer 7.
Go figure.
I'm guessing Adobe and Microsoft will probably coordinate their efforts and eventually create a solution to this conflict, one that will permit Windows Vista users to run the latest version of Adobe products, and have Adobe products compatible with the latest version of the Internet Explorer browser.
Thank you.
I was reading your message, listening to some music to Itunes, and look at your remark to be patient. So I click for the X times on my version 8 in french, and seconds later a window open to let me see the installation procedure. It has install correctly and open my pdf files OK. Strange ..
Does anyone know a sollution?
Kind regards
Does anyone have a clue as to what all this means????
I don't know if I can help or not, but I'll try.
Did you read the earlier messages in this thread?
Apparently there are incompatibility issues with Adobe Reader 8 in Windows Vista, and also a conflict with Adobe Reader 7.9 and Internet Explorer 7.
The problem was solved by two things:
First, remove Adobe Reader 8 from Windows Vista, and install Adobe Reader 7.9
This will permit you to open PDF documents that are stored in your computer.
Second, use the Mozilla Firefox browser when you want to open a PDF document at a web site.
If you try to use Internet Explorer 7, the Adobe Reader 7.9 will cause the Internet Explorer 7 browser to shut down.
Adobe Reader 7.9 works normally with the Mozilla Firefox browser.
I'm hoping the folks at Adobe and Microsoft will create a patch so Adobe Reader 8 will be compatible with Windows Vista, and/or Adobe Reader 7.9 will be compatible with Internet Explorer 7.
Of course, keep in mind that every computer is different, and every user is different.
So, what works for me might not be applicable in your case.
If you go to the Microsoft web site and submit a bug report, within a day, a technician will call you, and help you by taking control of your computer from their location.
If, due to Microsoft outsourcing to foreign countries, you have trouble understanding what the technician is saying, just politely tell them over and over that you simply can't understand what they're saying, and they will put someone else on the phone who speaks better English.
At least, that was my own experience, and everything worked out satisfactorily.
Thank you.
Thanks You
Martin Thomas
Steps to reproduce bug:
1. Attempt to install adobe reader with or without User Account control as Domain Admin, Local Admin
I was getting the same error when I attempted to install version 8... I don't know for sure, but I'm assuming it's a read/write issue with the temp folder in your user profile. The work-around for this is to naviage to your Temp folder in your profile and copy the Adobe installation files to a separate folder when you are prompted to continue in the installation..
1) Create an Adobe folder in your C:\
2) Re-download the Adobe Reader application.
3) Click Run when prompted (This will begin the file extraction)
4) When prompted to begin the installation, copy the files from: C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\LocalLow\Netopsystems\Temp to your C:\Adobe folder.
5) Continue the installation, click OK when the error is returned.
6) Open your Adobe folder on your C:\ and begin a new installation as normal.
Hope that helps!
As every computer is different, and every user is different, what worked for you did NOT work for me.
I did just as you said, once again downloading Adobe Reader 8, then right clicking on "Properties", selecting "Compatibility", and checking "Windows XP (SP2)".
But, while Adobe Reader 8 will open ONCE in Windows Vista, and then ONLY at the conclusion of the installation process, if I close the Adobe Reader 8 program, it will NOT open again.
So, the only solution that worked for me was the same thing I've been doing.
I uninstalled Adobe Reader 8 and installed Adobe Reader 7.9, which must be used with the Mozilla Firefox browser, because Adobe Reader 7.9 conflicts with the Internet Explorer 7 browser.
Apparently, the Internet Explorer 7 browser will only work with Adobe Reader 8, because Adobe Reader 7.9 causes the browser to shut down.
In your post, you didn't specify if you were using Windows Vista or Windows XP.
I have upgraded my Windows XP Media Center Edition to Windows Vista, and that's why I'm having all these software compatibility issues.
Yes, I did run the evaluation program before installing Windows Vista, and no problems were indicated for Adobe Reader 8, which had been working perfectly before I upgraded.
Microsoft and/or Adobe need to coordinate their efforts to find a fix that will permit Windows Vista users to use the latest versions of Adobe Reader and Internet Explorer.
I wonder if anyone from Adobe or Microsoft reads these posts?
It would be nice if we could get a response.
Thank you.
I'd have thought that Adobe would have put this info on the download page
by now.
It's in a KB doc.
I'd have thought that Adobe would have put this info on the download page by now.
It wasn't working on my Windows Ultimate 64bit PC (fresh install).
Steve B
He took control of my computer and did some things which, sure enough, allowed Adobe Reader 7.9 to open in Internet Explorer 7.
What did he do?
Durned if I know.
I just tried to open a PDF document on the web, and got the same old error message I've been getting:
"Internet Explorer Has Stopped Working."
"Internet Explorer Will Now Close."
So for me, it's back to using the Mozilla Firefox browser to open PDF documents with Adobe Reader 7.9
The technician did admit that they're really learning by experimenting, just as I am, because Windows Vista is so new that everybody is still trying to figure out what can or can't be done in Windows Vista.
Thank you.
Adobe technicians DO monitor these messages - - - AND they even reply!!!
Of course, the answer doesn't help me any, but if it helps some of you other guys, that's great.
Thank you.
Thanks for telling us about Foxit Software.
I'd never heard of it before.
I did download and install the Foxit Reader, and it works perfectly with Internet Explorer 7.
I reckon Foxit has just grabbed Adobe's market, huh?
I'll have to e-mail the Microsoft technicians in Bombay, India to let them know about this latest development.
Since I already paid for the upgrade from Windows XP to Windows Vista, would I have to pay AGAIN for a clean installation?
I wonder if Microsoft will address this problem, or just ignore it?
Thank you.
With Foxit Reader, you can hide the tool bar and view the document full screen.
That's the way I like to work.
Adobe has some catching up to do.
Thank you.
Glad you like Foxit. Great little program.
Cheers
1)Make a directory on your HDD called C:\AdobeReader\
2)Run the adobe reader.exe file
3)When prompted to begin the installation, copy the files from: C:\Users\<user name>\AppData\LocalLow\Netopsystems\Temp\ to C:\AdobeReader\
4) After the files have been copied run the Acroread.MSI file
Adobe reader will install itself correctly
Your welcome!
