I am also trying to install an update to the Reader. About once a week I get a pop-up telling me that the Reader needs attention. When I click on it a download starts, but when I go to install it I always get this error message: "Package could not be opened. Verify that the patch package exists - etc. etc.

I have been really getting pissed at this thing constantly failing so I went to the website and downloaded the older upgrade and the very same thing happened there too. I have also tried to download and install the latest 8.0 version and I get the very same error message.

I am really getting sick of this. The Adobe website is useless and that's why I'm here in a last ditch hope to get an answer. So far my old reader is working just fine, but if it should stop, I just hope somebody else out there has a more popular program and I won't have to use the Adobe Reader any more.

BTW, I am using Windows XP SP2 with Reader 5.0.5.

1. Download Reader 8 to your desktop.

2. Start> Control Panel> Add or Remove Programs. Uninstall ALL prior versions.

3. Restart your computer.

4. Double click the installation file on your desktop.

I can't install either versions 7 or 8 of Reader. At a late point in the installation, it tells me that there is an unnamed feature that it can't find on my drive and to insert the CD for version 6, which (of course) I don't have. Is there any solution to this dilemma?

Remembner the previous advice-UNINSTALL ALL prior versions entirely. This may also mean deleting references in the Registry (Dangerous-be very careful) as well. Then you should download a clean copy of V 8 to a folder for installation. Make sure after each step to reboot.

Here is the message word-for-word:
"The feature you are trying to use is on a CD-ROM or other removable disk that is not available.
Insert the 'Adobe Reader 6.0' disk and click OK."

Incidentally, the file that it is looking for is:
adobe reader 6.0.msi

It will not accept
adobe reader 6.0.1.msi

nor
adobe reader 7.0.msi
both of which I readily found with Windows search.
