I currently use Windows 2000 and Premiere 6.5 with my Pinnacle DV500. Recently I have been having problems with Premiere. Some AVI clips, of varying lengths, have been imported into Premiere but when I drag them into the timeline, they do not fill the timeline for the length of the AVI, they appear as just audio clips of one frame duration. Another strange effect is that when I do a cross fade the first clip inverts for the transition period.

When I imported the AVI files into Vegas Video the length of the clips on the timeline is correct and there is no problem with the cross fades inverting. Being a sharp sort of guy I immediately uninstalled Premiere and the DV 500 software and reinstalled them - the problem was still there!

I could use Vegas but can't export the composite through my DV500, I could change to Premiere Pro but that doesn't support my OS, I could change my DV500 but don't want to incur the expense.

Is there a solution to the Premiere problem of inverted cross fades and the timeline problem? Is there another video editing prog that I could use that would allow me to export from my DV500 using Windows 2000?

Did you already try starting Premiere while holding down the CTRL+Shift keys until you get the load settings screen?

Hi Daniel,

I just tred that - didn't know what I was trying to achieve, but the problem still persists.

Thanks,,

Bil.

That resets the Prem60.ini file and often cures problems like that.
The other thing to do is download a spyware destroyer like Spyware S&D and see if there's something messing you up. Common spyware that will interfere with Premiere are Xupiter, Gator, and BonzoBuddy.

I am using an identical set up, and have also experienced your problem, but on a very seldom basis. I am using a Panasonic AJ-D250 DVCPro deck with a firewire card to capture, I've noticed that the only time my clips seem to do this is when I've let the tape run into blank before stopping the capture. It doesn't do it every time I run into blank, but that seems to be the only common variable I've been able to identify. Since I made the connection, I'm just careful to stop the capture before the end of the last shot, and have not had the problem since.

This isn't a real solution, but has been an effective work-around for me. Hope it helps.

If you have not yet installed the very latest drivers for the DV500 then you should do so. Many previously reported problems with Premiere and DV500 operation was resolved with this upgrade.

Update:

I have removed the DV500 and the problem of the much shortened timeline with just audio disappears. I load all of the clips and can produce a normal video for output. As soon as I reinsert the DV500 (have tried all PCI slots) and reinstall the latest driver, some of the previously correct AVI's revert to one frame of audio (just ike the original problem) although all remaining clips retain their original places.

So, is there any other software I could use that would allow me to export through a DV500 so that I can see if it is just a DV500 problem or a DV500/Premiere compatibility problem?

Take a look at Scenalyzer (http://www.scenalyzer.com/). It supports the DV500 analog ports.

I think I have the same problem as you Lee. I ran the 2 problem AVI clips through an AVI splitter then imported the split clips and the problem has been resolved. I am just about to report the work around to Pinnacle who have tried to help me with the problem. Unfortunately they had not encountered this problem before and were unable to offer a solution. Like you, I will be more careful when capturing in future.

Thanks for all of your help.

Regards,

Bill.

Mr. williams, I used to use dv500 to import into premiere 6, and I had all kinds of audio problems. I know you don't want to send money, but for $250.00 you can buy canopus ADVC 100. It's a lot better that dv500 and it works with any editing software that can use firewire.

I know what I am going to say will not help you but...
I agree with Gabe. I had to change to Canopus because I couldn't cope with so many problems Pinnacle was giving me.
You should consider having a look at Canopus. Sorry I can't be more helpful. Wish you luck!

William,

You might want to take this over the the DV500 forum at <http://webboard.pinnaclesys.com/read_forums.asp?WebboardID=4&SectionID=12&lng=1>. A couple of things to check for: When you uninstalled and re-installed the DV500 drivers did you answer Yes to the question of removing shared files? You must answer Yes or several older files are left behind and not replaced with the newer versions. Also, did you ever install the Edition 5 trial on your computer? If yes, uninstall it and the DV500 drivers and then re-install just the DV500 drivers.

Good luck.

oops, I also forgot to mention that these are clips imported from the middle of a tape in both Batch capture and manual record mode.

I have similar problem.

Import via 1394 port into Premiere 6.5. I have a DV500 installed.

File size is 1.24 GB (1,341,435,240 bytes) and 6 minutes long.
The bin file says duration is -0;01;09;11 and it won't drag onto the timeline.

When using Pinnacle AVI DV settings (Project Settings - Project Compressor), you can't drag the file from the bin to the timeline.

When using Microsoft DV (NTSC) compressor, then the clip will drag to the timeline and show only one frame and no audio.

Unless there is something else someone comes up with, I guess I'll try the avi splitter and then maybe Canopus. Looks like New versions are leaving us only to remember when DV500/Premiere WAS a good idea?
ugh

Here is a link from (many) previous discussions of the - (minus) problem... may fix your problem

<http://www.xs4all.nl/~jhariot/html/premiere.html>

Also... NEVER try to edit MP3 files with Premiere

Thanks John. I feel a little dumb asking this, but am I supposed to know what is between the www and the /~jhariot in the URL?

Beats me... this link has been posted here before when people have asked about the minus problem, so I just cut and pasted from a previous message
