"could not initialize photoshop because of a program error"
Does anybody know how to fix this?
Cheers

* Cold boot, and log-in as Administrator
* Uninstall any previous versions of Photoshop - be sure to have the CD from a valid previous version to use if you bought the v7.0 upgrade
* shutdown
* cold boot
* login as Administrator
* shut down all virus scanning and tsr's
* check to see that the previous photoshop install directory was deleted (this usually is under \program files\Adobe\Photoshop 6.0)
* delete any leftover Photoshop directories/folders
* insert PS7.0 cd and follow instructions
* reboot
This worked on one of my computers, but not on the other. Thus far I haven't been able to get PS 7 to run on my primary computer.
Hope this helps!
I have a P4, 1.5 ghz, 512 mb ram and XP.
I had my local computer technician add a separate hard drive with 2 partitions and made one of them the scratch disk for Photoshop and Illustrator. No more problems since, and I usually have 4-5 programs open at the same time.
BTW, the computer where I've managed to get PS7 to run is an AMD K6-3 333mnz with 384mb and only a single hard disk. My main computer where it won't run/install properly is a P4 1.6ghz, 512 ram, three 40gig hard drives, and Windows 2000 Pro SP2.
Check the Font directory to make sure you don't have more than 200 fonts. Photoshop will NOT run with more than 200 fonts. It crashes with an error. I have tested this on about 25 different machines of all different types. Adobe Acrobat Reader is the same.

>>Photoshop will NOT run with more than 200 fonts<<
That just isn't true - It is VERY system dependent.
Note that I am NOT suggesting that you aren't seeing problems on the
machines that you have tested on.
As a test I have just activated 800 fonts on a Win2k system and both PS7 and
Acrobat 5 functioned without problems. These are a mixture of TTFonts and
Type 1's all managed via ATM DeLuxe.
However, I wouldn't dream of running with that many fonts active as it will
be detrimental to system performance.
Win2k's and XP's native handling of Type 1 fonts is, however, suspect IMHO,
and if that's how you are running Type 1's, that could be the cause of your
problems.

Just for fun I activated 1450 fonts...
Photoshop keeps smiling.
Not that I would recommend this <g>
