Hi-

Its been a few weeks since anyone posted to this...i started to have the problem today, so am just now finding this.

heres what i experienced...Im working on files coming from a mac on my pc (CS3 on XP pro), no problems saving the files as newly created psds. But when i brought them to my client (new power mac, all the bells and whistles, CS3, Leopard) i couldnt get them to save... "left open etc".

I had brought them on a portable drive, transfered them to his drive through finder windows. Bridge couldnt generate thumbnails and Ps couldnt save. But I noticed that the files on my portable drive were showing up in Bridge with thumbnails...weird...so i transfered the files from within Bridge....thumbnails followed and saving in Ps not longer a problem. Weird.

Dont know if any of it will help you guys...but is worth a try to do everything in Br and see what happens.

peace.happy earth day.

Has anyone come up with a solution to this yet? it's driving me nuts. I deleted prefs and it worked up unitl the next launch of P.Shop.

I also ran cron and permission fixes.

sounds like your prefs are corrupt again. reset them.

how are you shutting down? are you using file> exit or do you just power off your computer at night with photoshop still up? that could do it.

anyway, once working again, get everything set up the way you want an make a copy of your preferences. that way next time they go wonky, you can just copy the good set back over and you should be good to go.

OK, still doesn't work.

BUT I think i may have found the culprit.

QuarkXpress

If I open another file, save it, open again edit etc it saves over it fine. IF the file is placed into Xpress, that's when i cannot overwrite, Quark must be doing some nasty file polling....

Off to the Quark forums for a rant....

<sarcasm>oh that's a surprise!</sarcasm> :)

well anyway, you learned about having a backup copy of your preferences. good luck mark.

OK, think i found the solution, so far....
Just to note, i'm on a Mac but i'm sure the problem is similar to Windows users.

I deleted the whole Quark Preferences folder (dir). All seems OK for now.

It does and I have used it. XP doesn't especially like it and you'll see numerous complaints if you look at the Event Viewer. But it hasn't caused any crashes and it usually does the trick, so...

if you have Bridge open you will get this save error. it seems Bridge is "using" the file. Close Bridge and then save your file.

if you have an older version of ps installed (v 7 or lower) search for and rename/delete psicon.dll. that can also leave files open.

in the meantime, save your file with a new name so you don't lose it.

Kingy, do you have Photoshop 7 or earlier on your system (whether or not you are using it when the problem occurs), or have you succumbed to the temptation of installing a file called psicon.dll to allow you to see thumbnails of .psd files in Windows Explorer? If so, psicon.dll is the problem. Do a thorough search, looking in all folders, including system folders, and showing hidden and system files. Get rid of it where ever it is found.

If you don't have psicon.dll, then you have some other issue. Probably another file viewer shell extension.

Thanks Michael, The system I am using has never had Photoshop 7 or earlier installed. I am running 10.0.1 and update whenever available.
I did a thorough search for psicon.dll anyway with no result.
The opinions of several IT 'guru' associates are:
1. It could be a security/permissions issue on my network.
2. It could be a 'glitch' with my NAS (D-Link DNS-343) which apparently runs a Linux operating system.
D-Link were very helpful and are running tests.
Adobe were pathetic and after telling me they were aware of the issue suggested a workaround of saving files to my local HD then manually dragging to the storage device.
I will persevere however and post any answers I find.
Thanks again Michael

G'day Michael, problem solved.
For anyone else that has the same issue, the problem was due to my antivirus checking files saved on my network which is why they came up as 'open' or 'in use'.
With my antivirus (Avast) it was simply a matter of turning off the 'network shield' option in the 'on access protection' controls.
It was the extremely helpful helpdesk guy (Neil) at D-Link that pointed me in the right direction. Still not sure if it's an issue just with my D-Link device but it's gone away anyhow.
Thanks again

I'm having similar problems with not being able to save files after editing them (and giving them a new file-name, obviously) in Photoshop Elements 4.0. I get an error message saying (for instance): "Could not save as (whatever I'm trying to name the file) because the file is already in use or was left open". Then I see a .tmp file (that I can't open)

I did a search and found that the file was being saved twice, once within Photoshop (where I'm working with it) and also in…..

"C:\Documents and Settings\Owner\My Documents\My Pictures\Temporary"

I'm assuming this is the problem, but if you have any clue as to why is this happening and what I can do about it, I'd welcome any input. I've been using PSE-4.0 for years, and this problem just started cropping up. The only (cumbersome) way around this problem has been to just make my edits (in PSE-4.0) and do a "save" under the original file name, then go into explorer and rename the file. So, in short, I cannot do what I've been doing for years, editing a picture and saving it (renamed) in the sane folder (or a different one).

I can "see" the .tmp files in PSE-4.0, but they won't open.. but they will in JASC.. odd..

Thanks-
Bob

G'day Brycee's Dad
The only option I've found that works is disabling my anti-virus on-access protection whilst using Photoshop.
I am using Avast anti-virus and disabling that solves the problem for me but I haven't tested any other anti-virus software as yet.
I have asked Avast about a solution for this but haven't had a reply yet.
Hope that is of some help.

This is a known problem in Photoshop.

Since you have Elements the solution may not work, so try in the appropriate forum:

Hi Kingy-

Thanks for your input. I used to have Avast and recently switched to AVG. I tried disabling AVG (even removed it temporarily) and it did not help, so (it seems) the problem is "elsewhere". About a month ago, I had a computer "guru" work on my computer for other (more general problems) and she "tweaked" some settings. The problem appeared about that time. It's weird- I was using Avast for several years with no problems (with PSE-4.0). If I come up with any workable solutions, I'll let you know.

Nice to read your response. I had the same problem and I've been searching for the solution for several days. Finally, the solution was to turn off the antivirus (kaspersky), and Photoshop runs Ok.

Thanks a lot.

Hi Pedro-

Yes, I solved my problem in a similar way, but got so busy with "Pbotoshopping", that I forgot to "report in". I turned out to be a conflict with PC Tools Spyware Doctor. It took me a while to figure that out, as the two programs (Photoshop Elements 4.0 and Spyware Doctor
had "peacefully coexisted" for years (prior to the problem suddenly appearing.. afte a computer tech has changed some Windows settings).

I now have Photoshop Elements 6.0 (very much better than PSE-4) AND a new computer (with Vista). There seems to be no problem with PSE-6 and my (new and different) malware protection programs. As for all the reported Vista problems, I've had rleatively few, and my color management is much better 9and more consistent).

Happy Holidays-

I'm still lost on this subject.

Kingy, you seem to be the closest to my situation as i'm working with a NAS (D-Link DNS-343) as well. I'm on a mac though (just switched) and don't know what security options I have applied that could be causing the same problems as an antivirus program.

Has anyone with a Mac running CS3 trying to save open files with a NAS (D-Link DNS-343) had the same issue and managed to solve it?

Thanks!

project17, if you're not using any antivirus software that can be disabled temporarily to see if the problem goes away, I'm not really sure what to suggest. It's been quite some time since I left the Mac arena and too many operating system changes that would make my advice redundant I'm afraid. A up-to-date Mac guru would be your best shot.
Sorry I can't be more helpful.
