We are provided Russian content in Microsoft Word format. In Word, this displays correctly in the Cyrrilic alphabet.

We need to paste this into Photoshop, using Photoshop's Text tool. Ideally, it should be live, editable text, but rendered text (with the correct formatting settings) a la Photoshop 3 would also be acceptable.

Is this possible to do? It's not working at the moment. If not possible, can anyone recommend workarounds?

I was able to do this for a friend of mine recently using InDesign 2.0 and any of several Unicode fonts.

Actually, my friend wanted an Illustrator (vector) file, but the main problem -- copying and pasting the Russian text from MS Word -- would only work correctly with InDesign. This is, I believe, because, among all current Adobe apps, ID has the most advanced Unicode (and OpenType) support. I was able to save as an EPS out of ID for import into IL.

That same EPS could, of course, be opened in Photoshop, but it would be rasterized on open.

If you have no access to InDesign, I have no other suggestions.

If it's not a lot of text, you're welcome to e-mail me the MS Word document. I'll see what I can do with it.

I haven't tried specifically with Russian, but Photoshop 7 corrects some of
the Unicode cut-and-paste from other apps. Note that pasting in Unicode
doesn't font-lock, so you'll have to make sure you select a Russian-capable
font before pasting.

I just tried this with Windows XP, Notepad, and Photoshop, setting the font
to Tahoma in Photoshop before pasting and was able to paste in the Russian.
In addition, I was able to type in Russian directly into Photoshop 7 English
using Tahoma and a Russian keyboard layout. This should also work with
Win2k.

It may or may not work with Win9x/ME.

Thanks for the advice, Harron and Scott,

Still a problem, I'm afraid. We don't have InDesign and we're using Photoshop 5.5 on Win98. Not too much chance of upgrading.

One other workaround has occurred to me, although I still have to try it: I can export the Word document in PDF format, and rasterise that in Photoshop to the size desired. With a bit of trial and error, I may be able to turn it into a fairly smooth process.

Photoshop 7 corrects the Unicode font problem (about time!). If you're not planning on upgrade, then do this: In Windows Registry go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Nls\Codepage and change the value of 1252 to cp_1251.nls and restart Windows. That'll solve all your problems.

I have a memory problem affecting input of Chinese characters in Photoshop documents. (My memory, not the computer's)

Has there been a change from 6 to 7? I can't figure out how to do this. I have the IME and fonts from MS, but can't make it work.

Help is appreciated,

Dirck

Yes, there has. Photoshop 7 is much more Unicode. You should be able to
paste in Unicode characters from Notepad; however, font-locking does not
occur on paste, so you'll need to select the appropriate font before
pasting.

Also, if the GB 18030 update has been applied, we try and grab Unicode from
the IME (PS7), but font locking on type-in is prevented from working in that
case, so again, you'll need to make sure you select the correct font before
typing in the characters.

just got the ps7 but problems with cyrillic text persist. true, fonts that are designatedly cyrillic type alright. fonts such as arial and verdana, however, work only in latin script, although in word or coreldraw there is no problem. all the languages selectable from the character palette, use latin script, so that's rather useless.

What OS do you have. using Arial and vedana is working for me in W2K.

hmmm.... colleagues under xp report they too have the problem, so it's hardly the os that causes it.
