Just got the trial for CS4 and it works fine, with slight lag and such.
I have a 2.2ghz dual core, 2GB DDR2 RAM PC with integrated intel video card (I know, I will get a new one some day). Now my problem is the following:
When I draw with mouse there is no or almost no lag with brushes, even if they are set to pretty large size on a big file. The problem is with my tablet and CS4 only (it works perfect with Painter IX and any other application I've tested).
When I create a new file, draw on the background layer it is all fine. But if I decide to make a new layer or zoom in or out, the tablet will just stop drawing, but I can still draw perfectly with the mouse. Not even the straight line people around here seem to get. Also if I decide to make a new file, I have to close the whole PS and restart it in order to get my tablet drawing on the background layer. Sometimes changing opacity fixes the problem until I zoom or make another layer. Sometimes it will stop drawing with no apparent reason, which bugs me the most.
My tablet is Genius WizardPen 5x4 (it is still my first tablet and I seem to love it. Some day, after I make some other purchases I will get a new one)
Anyone encountering the same problem and know how to fix it?

Tablets (other than those from Wacom) tend not to play nice with new Photoshop releases. See if a new driver is available or inform the tablet manufacturer of the issues with CS4.

I checked for drivers, but they haven't released new one. I still believe it is problem with PS's programming. :\

Belief is not proof.

that tablet is a few years old, so I'm not sure that it'll work with PS CS4.

check for updated video card drivers (from Intel's website). if that doesn't work, disable OpenGL drawing in the Photoshop preferences and see how it fairs.

Also, have you tried turning off the pressure-sensitive features of PS?
to do this, open the Brushes panel in Photoshop, then uncheck everything from the left-hand side of the panel.

I don't need disabled pressure, the whole fun in digital painting is the pressure. :D The problem is that sometimes it works just perfectly. I can draw as much as I want until I zoom in or make a new layer or something like that. That's why I think it is PS's fault. I will check some more options later, with that pressure sensitivity and see if there is something that bugs the tablet. OpenGL is disabled by default, I can't enable it.

You will probably find it is the same problem as with the Trust tablet I have - as long as you do not use the mouse or keyboard, the pen works fine. Changing the Open GL, pressure, etc has no effect.

I agree that it is probably an Adobe problem - the tablet works fine with earlier versions of PS

Robert - it is not an Adobe problem. What you are describing is 100% a tablet driver issue. In the past, they always had to update their drivers for each release of Photoshop (and we still have no idea why).

If I had to guess, I would say they are using some kind of hack for a short cut similar to what game programmers do to video cards. Since they are hacks they are not guaranteed to be accessible in the next upgrade of photoshop.
But like I said I am only guessing, I lack the knowledge of the inner workings of drivers.

Here is an odd thing I have stumbled upon, but a possible solution to the straightline problem when drawing.

As before, if I use the pen to draw, and then use the keyboard or the mouse, the pen starts just giving straight lines. However, what I have now discovered is that if I change the size of the brush by using the drop-down brush tab, the pen will start to draw properly again. This works even if the size is changed by only one pixel.

If I use the [] keys the problem remains - it is only the drop-down that fixes it.
