After running an action creating .fpx, the file it usually creates is "1,748kb", but for some reason, it's creating a file with "0kb" ... What causes that and how can I remedy it?

Generally a 0K file is one that was created, but not successfully completed. One possible reason is that the disk was filled before the file was written.

What do you mean the disk was "filled"?

That there is less space available on the media than is required by the file you are saving.

I have plenty of disk space available on the drive im working on. Any other reasons this could possibly happen?

I am working on Windows XP. In Photoshop 6.0, I run an action which takes an image scanned at 500dpi (.TIFF) and sizes it to 2100 x 2100, adds a drop shadow to it and saves it as a .fpx. It then creates another copy, resizes it to 430 x 430, adds a drop shadow and saves it as a .jpg. Then I go to open the .fpx files, manipulate the image using the clone stamp tool and "fit image" to 600 x 600. Then I change the canvas size to 600 x 600. I close the window and it asks me if I want to save the file. I click yes. When I go back to open the file I get an "End of file.." error. The file size turns out to be "0kb" when it should be "1,748kb". And its a random occurence, which doesnt make much sense. I hope this info makes sense.

Could you try not closing the file as you save it, then when it produces a null file, see what happens when you save it again? The idea is to determine whether it is truly random, or fails consistently with a particular condition of the image in memory.

I'm thinking disk error. Run chkdsk /f to check the integrity of the drive, fixing any errors it finds.

Thanx Mel! Saving it instead of closing/saving seems to work, but I'm still getting the error message "Could not open ___.fpx because of a problem with the file-format module interface". Thoughts?

Enzo, I hope Dave's suggestion works for you. Otherwise, I suspect the new error you're getting is because the file is still open in PS. Still, you should be able to use Windows Explorer to check the filesize.

I uninstalled/reinstalled Photoshop 5.5/6.0 ... and I'm still not able to open up the .fpx files. Is there a download somewhere out there that would possibly fix this?

You need to reload the flashpix sw from the source where you first installed it. Maybe a driver disk from a camera manufacturer?
