I am using Photoshop CS2 with Windows XP. Why are all the photos that I import into Photoshop have the layer locked. I tried to save them both as .psd and as .jpeg. But, it makes no difference. In the layer pallette, the layer is marked as locked but the icons at the top are all grayed out. It is making it impossible to do anything with my photos.
Thanks, Joe

You can double click on the layer. It will ask you if you want to name it. You can type a name or use the default. When you click ok the layer will no longer be locked.
When you save the file you must use one of the formats that support layers for the layer to stay unlocked.

No it's not. You can do pretty much anything but move the layer.

BTW, if you hold down Alt while double-clicking in the Layers palette it skips the naming dialog.

You should consider making a COPY of the background and doing your work on that.
