I have seen a simulated oil painting effect supposedly done in photoshop. Can anyone point me to information on just how to go about getting this effect?
TIA

If you do a google search for "Hayes Island Cafe", it gives you an
excellent tutorial on this type of conversion.

One way of doing it:

1) Make 3 duplicates of your image. Your layer palette should look like this:

Background copy 3
Background copy 2
Background copy
Background

2) On Background copy 3, apply Filter>Stylize>Find Edges. Desaturate the results and set the layer blend mode to Multiply.

3) On background copy 2, apply Filter>Artistic>Dry Brush. Set the layer blend mode to Lighten

4) On background copy, apply Filter>Artistic>Palette Knife. Set the layer blend mode to Overlay.

5) On the background layer, apply Filter>Artistic>Watercolor. (If the Watercolor effect is too pronounced, double-click the Backgound layer to turn it to a normal layer. Lighten the layer opacity to taste).

6) Select All (Ctrl + A) and then Edit>Copy Merged. Paste to a new layer.

7) On the new layer, apply Filter>Texture>Texturizer set to Canvas with the light source at a diagonal angle (lower left, upper right, etc.).

I'd take a peek to Fantastic Machines' Paint Engine <http://www.fantasticmachines.com/html/paint_engine.htm> freeware filter. It's quite nice for what you want.

One thing you can do to the Find edges layer is paint over the lines with an art brush set to screen to change the edges from black to a color that more closely matches the colors in your image.

And Painter 7 will give you really wonderful effects, especially with impasto--you get a paint texture effect that really begins to look like oils

And if you are a Wacom user you can get it for 149.00 full version from Wacom.com--graphire or intuos!!

On thread # 2 BLUDVLZ
you lost me on step 6, so are you still on the bg layer when you do copy merged? And then just make a new layer and paste to it?

Doesn't really matter what layer you're on, as long as it is a visible layer.

And then just make a new layer and paste to it?

Just paste. The new layer will be automatically created.
