Hi,
I think I found why many people are having trouble with CS3 installers.
This bug is somekind related to the winBootstrapper files bargain with the installer. When you run setup.exe, the first thing the installer will do is run the bootstrapper.msi file. This file will copy some setup components to the hard drive then re-run the new setup.exe file from the hard disk cache.

I'm accutaly investigating why the bootstrapper crash at the start. To know if this post can help you, simply run the setup from a command prompt with administrative privileges. If it end with the error number 4, you're having the same problem as me.

Here's my point : After many test, reinstall, format, etc ... I notice that when Adobe Acrobat Professional 8.1(I didn't test with any other version as Reader or Standard but they may cause the same bug) is installed, any CS3 setup with the bootStrapper file will not work.

I think that Adobe Acrobat is somehow messing the cache or registry and crash the winbootStrapper.

I need your help to conduct this investigation. Simply reply to this post with the following information :

(E.G. my config)

Windows Version : Windows Vista Ultimate
CS3 Product currently installed : Acrobat Pro 8.1
Order of the installation/update : Acrobat Pro 8, update to 8.1 with the update manager
Error code during install* : Photoshop CS3 Extended setup error code 4

* You'll have this by running the setup from a command prompt run with administrative priviledges.

That's all, thank for your help.

Here's some news!

I can confirm that this is the problem. Adobe Acrobat Reader (Any editions) v8.1 is the guy to blame.
