For the amount of money I paid for this PageMaker product, I am quite frustrated with the issues I am having on my new Windows XP computer.

First, everytime I close a document or exit PageMaker 7.01, I get this error "Cannot Save Page Defaults File: Cannot Create File. 8021:16403". I cannot figure out why this error is occuring when Adobe's documentation specifically says the 7.01 version should resolve this error. Can anyone help?

Also, I cannot export as an adobe .pdf file. When I do, I get the error "error creating Acrobat printer style". I am a power user of this Windows XP computer. But myself as well as anyone else who uses the PC has issues with PageMaker.

Another error I get on trying to print something is "Cannot load target printer HP Deskjet 895C. Open the File>Document Setup dialog box and choose the appropriate printer driver in the 'compose to printer' menu. 8016:6608"

Can anyone help?

Thanks,
Ryan

Hi, Ryan,

> error "Cannot Save Page Defaults File: Cannot Create > File. 8021:16403".

The messages you are getting are consistent with a regular user. A restricted
user cannot customise the PageMaker environment. An administrator account must
be used.

"A limited user can launch PageMaker, use templates and create new documents
but cannot make preference changes or default changes. Changes made by the
administrator takes precedence for all users. A user can make changes during an
open session but when they exit the program, an error message stating that
changes cannot be made occurs. When a user opens a Template file, the message:
"Error 8021:16403 Cannot Save PageMaker Defaults File" appears. This does not
prohibit the user from using the document."

See the thread: PM7 in XP... "Cannot save PageMaker Defaults file."

Have you installed Acrobat Distiller, the Adobe Postscript driver and the
Distiller PPD from the PM installation CD?

See page 333 of the PM7 User Guide.

That means PM can not find your printer, usually because the file was created
using another "compose to" printer. If you have re-installed the printer or a
made a minor change to it, then you will get the error message.

See page 147 of the PM7 User Guide.

You can set your default "compose to" printer by closing all PM files and then
choosing your "compose to" printer. With PM, the printer driver is important
as it is required to calculate the spacing between letters and words so that
what you see on the screen is the same as that which appears on the printer/in
the PDF.

Hi,
We change printers often. How can we open a older doc created on a printer which is no longer available on our 7.01 PM?

You can still open the file (just click OK), but reset your 'compose to' printer under document set-up and be prepared for text reflow.
