Hi,
I am currently working in Thailand and would like to use Pagemaker as my DTP program. I have installed Thai fonts into the default windows directory and C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Fonts\Reqrd\CMaps - which was the only way I could get Photoshop to pick up Thai fonts.
Now, pagemaker has the Thai fonts in its list, and will display them, but I cant cut and paste Thai text from any source - Microsoft office or Photoshop. Since I cant type Thai this is a bit of a problem. Does anyone know how to cure this? I imagine its the same for Korean, Chinese etc...

Regards,
Dave

Hi, Dave,

You need an Asian version of PM whihc will read the double-byte Asian characters. This the best link I can find quickly with Google.

Ordinary English PM works quite happily with Thai fonts and is what most publishing people use here. The Thai alphabet occupies the upper portion of the font that is usually used by European funnies. PM does not support more than 255 characters in the font so be aware that a number of fonts supplied with Microsoft Office with names like Angsana New, Eucrosia New etc. are open type with the Thai characters moved up out of the Pagemaker range.
If you try to cut and paste Thai that uses these fonts into PM it won't work. Check the Thai font first and if its one of these change it to, say Angsana UPC or Eucrosia UPC etc which puts it back into the PM range.
I hope you are using a Thai version of Windows otherwise it's all doomed.

Hi Roger in Surin
Thanks for replying....... I had worked out that pagemaker only picked up the UPC fonts - so I was already suspecting that only the UPC fonts would paste anyway. BUT, they dont seem to either. I cant paste anything in Thai. But I can select a thai font and type in thai....
What I am using is windows 2000, of which I didnt think there was a Thai version. Obviously I have the Thai langauge support added, plus Thai fonts..... Office works fine in all its guises, and so now does photoshop although that was a pain. I was assuming pagemaker needed some tweak like I had to make there, i.e putting the fonts in the cmap folder or something.

Any ideas?

I suggest you read the FAQs here about operation under Windows 2000.
I read recently in relation to another program that Thai should be selected on your keyboard when copying Thai to the clipboard - which you can't do. I really do have great reservations about trying to use Pagemaker with Thai on a non-Thai operating system but I'm no expert in 2000 as I still use Win98 and like you need to copy and paste Thai from time to time.
Next time you are in Bangkok chat up a few people in Pantip Plaza as there's bound to be someone who speaks English.
