Please help!
Whenever we download new .exe file programs from the Internet, they are automatically filed by Windows XP with a green "PageMaker" icon, and are assigned a "*.p65" extension. They do not then open as executable files.

Can somebody PLEASE tell us how to STOP this, and how to EXTRACT and RETURN the mis-filed files into their original form???

Thank you in advance,
Roger Burnell

Hi, Roger,

Have you run a virus check?

Have you tried renaming the files as .exe? That should do the trick if the content hasn't been corrupted.

Thanks John. Yes, Norton Antivirus runs on a regular basis. The trouble is that although the files are ALREADY received and saved as *.exe, IN ADDITION to that, the computer has ADDED ".p65" as a FURTHER "internal" suffix to the end, not editable, and automatically displays it with the PageMaker 6.5 Logo in the corner of the properties file. We have not found how to RE-ASSIGN the files, and how to REMOVE this automatic internal assignment, and don't know how/where to get help!

Open a window or my computer. Go to tools>folder options>file types. Does EXE appear? Is PM assigned to open it?

Hi, Roger,

How are you downloading? Using an FTP app or whatever IE/NN uses by default?

You clearly have some registry corruption causing the files to have the P65 extension added to downloaded files.

I'll pursue the virus line a bit further - somethings get past Norton AV by using Java.

If you can download and run Stinger, it may find something.

I recall something similar on a friend's PC where downloaded *.exe files would not run at all though clearly other apps (like IE) ran as expected. I re-installed the OS (Win98SE) which cured it.

Thanks Sandy. I followed your direction.
No - there were no ".exe" file types shown. But you appear to be on the right track. Something, such as this "file mapping page" IS CLEARLY instructing the computer to do as it does. I now recall that once before this was caused when receiving files terminating in "pt5" that were UNRELATED by their author to Adobe/PageMaker, but were INTERPRETED that way upon arrival. The files I cannot receive normally say something like "you are receiving an octet file from..." whatever octet is.

I will now watch more closely next time it happens, and see if the control menu you referenced can UNcontrol the arrival.

Thanks,
Roger.
