Try re-installing distiller from the CD. The full Acrobat foces you to uninstall the previous version. Reader may have to do that as well and may have messed up your distiller.

I was using Pagemaker 7, exporting pdf files. Worked fine. Now it says can't find Distiller. Neither can I. The only change I can think of was upgrading Acrobat reader from 5 to 6. Does this eliminate Distiller. Now what? I paid good money for Pagemaker and expect it to work.

Thansk for any help.

Hi, Morley,

You need to pause for a moment get the process of creating a PDF clear in your mind and what each application is and does.

Distiller is a virtual printer. It takes the output data from the PostScript printer driver and instead of putting ink on paper, it creates a virtual page which you can distribute electronically.

Distiller is essential in the process of creating a PDF, and Adobe protect it very tightly.

Acrobat Reader is now called Adobe Reader. It does just that - read PDF files - and has no edit facilities. It is free and can be downloaded from Adobe's website <http://www.adobe.co.uk/products/acrobat/readstep2.html>. I would recommend you upgrade to AR6.

IIRC when that error message appears, you are offered "Browse" so you can locate it. The default folder for Distiller is usually something like C:\Program Files\Acrobat\Distillr

If the file Acrodist.exe is missing then you need to re-install it from your PM7 Application CD-ROM.

Illustrated guidance can be found here: <http://www.johndavies.mersinet.co.uk/exportpdf/installdistiller.htm>

Before you re-install Distiller, I recommend you clear out all the temporary files in your TEMP folder, run Scandisk and Defrag, and reboot your PC.

To find your TEMP folder, open "My Computer" and type in %TEMP% in the Address field.

Let me know how you get on.
