I am trying to create a high resolution PDF from InDesign by using Adobe PDF printer (not export).
I get the following error message
%%[ ProductName: Distiller ]%%
%%[ Error: Helvetica not found. Font cannot be embedded. ]%%
%%[ Error: invalidfont; OffendingCommand: findfont ]%%

Have you placed any EPSs or PDFs in the document?

In any event, if you are certain that you do not have any visible Helvetica glyphs in your document, then you can set Distiller to warn-and-continue when font embedding fails, rather than to stop distilling.

Is Helvetica available on your machine?

Distiller uses it to write the page information and if it's not available
this may be the cause of the distill failure.

"Distiller uses it to write the page information and if it's not available

I'm not sure what you mean by this. The Distiller error message reported by the OP indicates that there was a reference to Helvetica in the PostScript he was trying to distill. This PostScript was generated by InDesign.

When EPSs and PDFs are placed in InDesign, any fonts used in them are referred to in the PostScript InDesign generates--even for fonts that do not have any glyphs visible in any pages of the InDesign document.

I have a placed eps file that I originally created in Photoshop as a psd file then converted it to a Photoshop eps file.

"But when InDesign creates the Postscript for distilling, it writes the page
information in a fixed font. There has been discussion in this forum before
that the manual says (page 437) that this is Arial on the PC and the
Helvetica on the Mac, while in practice it is not always so (on my PC it is
Helvetica)."

Well, here's something funny. I just played around with this a bit, and on my Windows 2000 machine, the page information is in "TimesNewRomanPSMT". Go figure.

I stand corrected on the reading of the Postscript error (me no speaky
Postscript).

But when InDesign creates the Postscript for distilling, it writes the page
information in a fixed font. There has been discussion in this forum before
that the manual says (page 437) that this is Arial on the PC and the
Helvetica on the Mac, while in practice it is not always so (on my PC it is
Helvetica).

I know I have had pre-press problems over a missing Helvetica font which was
only needed to present the page information.

I'm a bit sketchy on this, so I would very much appreciate an explanation
from Someone Who Knows.
