Has anyone seen this?

Having a stylesheet that is working nicely, I have suddenly found that text keyed into a new text frame just won't format to styles.

If an existing frame containing text is copied and then edited to achieve the desired result, the styles work. The styles also work when existing text is copied into an empty new frame, or when text in existing text frames is being restyled.

Any ideas why styles are not working in this way?

well, you are lucky, over here InDesign 2.0.2. (Win2000) just crashes when we try to adjust any style...

Paragraph styles not working....

I don't know if this will work for you, but if I have a problem assigning a style to text, I first select the paragraph(s) and No character style, then I select the style I want.

Hope this helps.

Did the text place in from Word? If so, check to see if any Character-level Styles are in the Character Styles palette. You may want to delete them if they rode in on the Word doc's coattails. Then you may find that the text can be selected and Paragraph Styled with ease. Maybe.

Mike et al.

Thanks for your replies.

Mike, I was talking about keying direct into a new text frame. Text being imported (from any source) was OK.

I am in the past tense since after logging on today I can key and style to my heart's content. Perhaps I needed to log on again yesterday when this phenomenon appeared?

I have had this style failure occur before, but not with ID.

Tony,

Interesting. Its funny how often a reboot and housekeeping will make strange problems vanish. In addition to that, I keep my computer down near the floor where I can give it a kick with my right leg whenever it needs/deserves it. :-)

Which is often!
