Hello. I am new to this forum and fairly new to InDesign (I have been using InD now for about three months). I searched the archive here and found others were experiencing a similar problem but no one posted a solution. Perhaps someone can help.

I am using InDesign CS2 on an IBM PC with Windows XP Professional. When I attempt to place text from a simple Word file, the following error message occurs: "Cannot place this file. No filter found for requested operation."

This happens for any Word document I try (and I have tried several dozen times). I have also tried repeatedly exiting out of InDesign and starting up again, but the problem re-occurs.

The documentation I read clearly states one can place text from Word files. I have had no problems placing text from a simple TXT file nor any problems placing images.

Any help would be appreciated. Thank you much.

What version of Word created the file?

Hi Bob. It's Word 2000.

I'll second Joel's suggestion.

This is more of a workaround than a solution, but can you place an RTF generated from one of those unplace-able Word files?

Thanks for the suggestions. RTF seems to work. I also discovered the person who was giving me the Word *.doc files had Word set so the files were default saving as Word 6.0/95 compatible (even though he is using Word 2000). When I resave the files as Word 6.0/2000, the error message does not occur.
