ID CS3 crashes on startup

I know this is a well worn topic, but I've searched here and the web for a fix to no avail.

I am in the process of setting up a new system (Vista Home Premium, quad core, 4GB RAM). When I first installed ID it opened and appeared to function properly so I proceeded to install all of my primary apps. Now when ID launches I get "Adobe InDesign has stopped working" when the loading gets to "Calling Late Initializers..." with the Fault Module Name being AdobeOwl.dll.

I have tried the following fixes:
-Trashed preference file (Ctrl+Alt+Shift during loading)
-Upgraded to version 5.0.3.662
-Checked for corrupt fonts (Font Agent Pro says they're okay). Only the fonts that came with Vista, PS, ID and Office 2003 have been installed.
-Changed default printer from network laser to local PDF printer driver
-Uninstall/reinstall several times

Any idea where to look? Been doing this for days...

After more fiddling, I tried setting the compatibility mode to XP (SP2), and it starts and seems to run fine!
