I'm using InDesign CS2 ver:4.0.0 (later update to 4.0.5) Windows version. I need update library items frequently.
3 of InDesign installation some have the "Update Library Item" in "Object Library palette menu" but some don't have.
So I update InDesign to 4.0.5 -- good the menu itme appears. But some time later only one installation still show this menu item(the version is 4.0.0) other two(version 4.0.5!) disappear again.
I try to update InDesign again, no change.
I searched help, knowledge base, forum. Even windows registery to find how to show this menu item but failed.
So have to delete library item, then put a new item, then edit it's name...
-----HOW CAN I LET INDESIGN SHOW [UPDATE LIBRARY ITEM] IN [OBJECT LIBRARY PALETTE MENU]?

Sounds like you need to replace the preferences.

Normally update Library Item will be grayed out (not selectable) if you don't have anything selected to update. Could that be the issue?

But what I understand is that in your case the entire command disappers from the dropdown menu?

Is the issue replicable in a new library that you create? Or does it only occur on previously created libraries? If so, in which version of InDesign were those libraries created?

I'm having this same issue. I'm using CS2 for now. If I make new libraries I still have the same problem. It's like the feature for Updating the Libraries has just disappeared...

Any solutions to this issue?

We have the same challenge. We have about 10 people on our team using InDesign. It seems like once the "Update Item" line disappears we can not get it back without re-installing the program. It seems totally random. Some of us still have that option. Some don't. Looking for help here as we work at a large company and getting programs re-installed has to go through IT and can be a time consuming process.

Thanks, Kerri. Appreciate your input. Going to try to get IT to reinstall it.

We too have a large firm - there are about 5 of us working on the libraries over a server - can definitely be trying. Hoping CS3 will solve a lot of our issues.

An update:
Reinstalling InDesign didn't fix it for us, but we got on the phone with Adobe. They suggested taking the InDesign Preference folder out of it's place on my harddrive.

First quit out of InDesign.

On a Mac it's in:
Main User > Library > Preferences > Adobe InDesign > Version 4.0 (or whatever version you have)

Take the entire folder and drag it to your desktop. This should fix it. If you want to save some of those preferences you'll have to go through that file and add each one, one-by-one, and see which one is causing the mix-up.
