I am working on a project that will be written in Simplified Chinese. It's the first time I do something in Chinese and now I have run into a problem I am not sure how to solve.

I have so far used SimSun font throughout the document and it has worked fine, but when I just talked to my client in China and I mentioned that I use Simsun font he told me he wants Arial and not SimSun.
Now, what do I do? Is there some Arial font that works for Chinese that I can udownload? If i use the "normal" Arial all the chinese text of course changes into the dreaded "boxes".

I am thankful for any help on thsi matter. I use In Design CS2 and work on a PC.

The font Arial Unicode (in InDesign called Arial Unicode MS, it is below the part with SimSun) contains characters for all unicode, so also for Chinese. But it is an utterly ugly font.

Well, Arial Unicode is delivered with XP, so it should be no problem to copy it from your PC to your laptop. Or find the font on the Windows XP CD. The only problem is that it is a very large font (more than 20MB), so when exporting to PDF it is advisable to subset fonts.

Thanks Teus! On my laptop I have Windows XP and Creative Suite CS2 and on my stationary PC i have windows 2000 and InDesign CS2. On my latop I have no Arial Unicode MS among the fonts, but I did find it on my stationary PC now when I looked for it.
I don't know why it's only there and not on my laptop since it should automatically be installed with Windows XP.

Stupid question perhaps, but how do you subset fonts?

I will burn the pdf on a CD anyway to the printer so It's okay of the file is large.

I should check my XP CD for the unicode.

If you export to PDF, the option is at the top of the Advaced tab. Standard subsetting is on. It means only the characters from the font that are used in the document will be included in the PDF.

Hi,

I am having similar issues with Arial unicode MS font. I have an EPS with some text written using Arial Unicode MS and font is embedded into it. When I try to open this EPS in AI 11.0 it shows me all junk.

Interstingly when I try to open the EPS without Arial unicode font embeded it opens the file and shows me all characters except greek and other language characters (Only english text is visible)

Is it a known problem? Is there something could be done with AI preferences etc. ?

Help !!

Santosh Thankachan
