I'm in the midst of a calender project. I am likewise dismayed that there is no easy way to preview a 'calendar spread'... i.e. a way to view a horizontal layout of'facing pages' with the binding at the top instead of the left side.... I have taken Bob's advice to heart and have:
1. set up an actual size document with 11"w x 17"h pages so that I can layout the entire document (i.e. 2 pages or a viewer spread) and see what it will look like.
2. design and PDF that document
3. create a 'standard' new document with 8.5 x 11 facing pages
4. place 'page1.pdf' on page one. Rotate 90 degrees. Since original document is 11"w x 17"h, I must move the bounding box to crop it to 11"w x 8.5"h
5. place 'page1.pdf' on page 2. Rotate 90 degrees. Same cropping but to eliminate the top half and leave bottom half in postition.
6. Repeat

I understand the workaround for this pagination. I would put it into printer spreads directly but would prefer for ID to do SOME of the work.

Here are my questions:
• Since ID (at least in CS2) honors the color profiles of any embedded PDF, how do we best color manage embedded PDF files? Is it OK to embed a PDF in a PDF as Bob suggests?
• Assuming we are using a synchronized suite color profile, can we be sure that, for instance, Illustrator files embedded in ID using spot colors and transparency, will be able to separate correctly in ID.
• What if we copy and paste from AI to ID with spot colors and transparency? Will that separate correctly and be correctly color managed?
• What if we also have images that need not necessarily be tied to the AI file but must be placed in the final document in ID? What if these are PS duotones? Will they be correctly color managed as a PDF within a PDF?

What I am getting at here is not just an effective way to work around the layout issue with a calendar, but the correct way to deal with color management and to work effectively between applications.

My initial experiments suggest that when constructed correctly, the AI elements with transparency and spot colors WILL separate correctly whether placed or pasted. There are, however, significant differences in how they can be manipulated in ID. I'd just like to hear some alternate viewpoints!

Thanks for the insights!

You may want to take a look at this scripting method of creating the calendar layout:

Teus de Jong, "Making a document with horizontal (or top) binding spine, e.g. for calendars" #1, 18 Nov 2005 8:01 am </cgi-bin/webx?14@@.3bbd4bb6/0>

and read the discussion that follows it.
