I tried re-installing, but it did not help.
appreciate any advice...

InDesign can't open QuarkXPress files if you've used third party extensions which are required to open the file. In that case, reopen the XPress file, disable the XTension, and resave the file.
"Cannot open the file" "[FILENAME.qxd]", Adobe InDesign may not support the file format, or a plug-in that supports the file format may be missing"
I'll ask the person who sent the file to turn off extensions, etc and give that a try...
Thanks!
I actually went in and completely removed all of my extensions, opened the Quark file, re-saved it and then tried opening it in InDesign. Still nothing. Same message of not being able to read file format or needing some plug-in.
Any help would be great for both of us.
Thanks.

I've never tried to open one but what is the error message you get when you try and open a Quark 5 file?
Maybe this is what is causing the problem: re-save the QXP file back to v.4.1.1.
You may also have a conflicting font problem.
Beware of .dfonts.
[I find it ironic that Apple chose to name those damnable fonts : ".dfonts"!]
InD 2 can't open QXP5 files because QXP5 was issued after Indesign.
Thanks Ann. That's what I was getting at.
You can't open 5.0 files. You'll need to save them back to 4.1.
