Have posted this before without luck, but I'm still having a crashing problem when I try to access page 10 of my monthly newspaper layout. The paper is a tabloid (page size 405mm x 290mm) and usually over 20-32 pages.
I don't think it is a corrupt document, as I've rebuilt my template from the ground up twice and it still happens on EVERY subsequent document I produce at that size. I start to insert ads, get to page 9 and then either jump or scroll to page 10, and ID immediately quits. It even happens on a different computer running 9.2. It is always page 10 that is the problem, no matter whether the document is 20 pages or more. I've tried changing the font of the running heads and folios (from Myriad to Fruitiger and other known stable fonts) etc, but that doesn't work. It still crashes when I flip to page 10.
I know that at least one other user has posted this page 10 problem. Can anyone out there a) take this seriously and b) help?
BTW, have done all the Unexpected quit fixes, long document fixes etc. No dice.
There's nothing on page 10 that is different from other pages. I have a headline, name of publication and auto-number, like all pages.
I will say that it doesn't normally happen until I start inserting ads, which may be pdf's or Indesign ads, or image files or a mixture. Nothing unusual though, the usual stuff that I set, plus what ad agencies etc supply. It's different in every issue, but the problem remains.
I'll try stripping that page of any master items. But it's not much use to me if I can't use page 10. At the moment I have to set my newspaper in two documents, 1-9 and 10-X, which is very annoying.
I'm not using In-Rip trapping.
I wonder if I can email my template to someone to see id they recreate the problem using that? Might tell me something?
I used about eight fonts, Adobe Garamond, Helvetica, Hel Bold, Palatino, Frutiger, Stone Age BC, Candy Bits and Lucida Handwriting. I placed headline banners on the master pages, I used gradient tints and some pantone colors.
I ran the test 4 times on these systems.
Mac OS 9.2.2/ G4 dual 877mhz at 512mb ram. Mac OS 10.2.3 same system and a G5 with Panther.
I never had one lock up or application quit on any of the test.
Is there something in common with this file? I know you mentioned rebuilding the template from scratch, but is there an artwork or a font used on this page that your document has in common? Have you stripped all master items, images and text from page 10 and tried it that way?
I did four postscript test using different PPD files, and exported to PDF on each test. I have to think that it is an element on that page that is causing your application to quit. Are you using In-Rip trapping by any chance?
Good Luck,

You'll be interested to know that it reached a head today - the file crashed one last time and wouldn't re-open (ID quit on launch). So I took it down to a friend’s PC (not a Mac) who also uses ID 2, and she opened it up no worries and re-saved it WITHOUT the "+" sign in the document title (ie 50+). She emailed it back to me and it has been solid as a rock since (touch wood)!!
So I’m hoping that if I re-create the template and don’t use a + sign in the document title, maybe it will be OK. My friend says that symbols like that can cause problems on a PC (reads it as a DOS command), so maybe there is something in that for the Mac as well. Seems unlikely, but with these kinds of problems, you never know...
Seems like characters and such in the file name could have been the problem.
