Steve,

It sounds like some local formatting (applied with out character styles) was applied to the text. When you apply the character style, that local formatting is getting changed.

I can't tell you exactly what to do as I would have to see the file to tell what is the "real" setting and what is the local override.

But I would look for the following:

When you select the text before applying the varnish, is there a plus sign in the Paragraph Style listing?

Try Opt-click on the name of the Paragraph style to remove any local override.

Try redefining the Paragraph style before applying the character style.

I'm sure others will have suggestions.

We are a commercial print shop's prepress dept and have received a customer's document built with character styles. We needed to copy the document to create a varnish file, and when recoloring the type to a varnish spot color, applying a character style is causing the text to shift down vertically about .02". We are able to manually correct this positioning error so the varnish fits the 4/c type, but I would really appreciate knowing why this is happening.

The style in question is based on style A with the following additional attributes: + Bold + leading 18pt + tracking 50 + color Black + all caps + stroke color dark yellow - overprint.
Style A:[NO character style] + Gill Sans + Italic + size 18pt + leading 21.6pt + tracking 100 + pair kern auto + char width 100% + char width 100% + color dark yellow - underline - strikethrough - ligatures - no break + pair kern method Metrics + stroke 1pt + not shifted - caps + stroke color C=60 M=65 Y=100 K=0 + position normal + stroke tine 100% + tint 100%.

I see nothing in these styles that would cause any shifting. If the style is applied twice to the same text, the shift is apparent, but undoing the second application of the style does not undo the text shift. The only way to get back is to revert the document.

Any suggestions will be appreciated. I can contact you off the forum and email screen snaps or supply further info if needed.

Thanks in advance!

Steve

Steve,

It might also be that the align on baseline is active for one and not the other or the document baselines differ if you are copying into a new document.
